Letters to the editor Wednesday

Generic apartments will create more stress The Victorian District is indeed a neighborhood. As a long-time resident, I have watched it grow in the 30 years that I’ve lived on East Bolton Street . I hope we can hang onto our neighborhood. Currently it is being buffeted by more and more vacation rentals and requests for new hotels. Now, we are confronted with a proposed large, generic apartment complex which is too big for the requested site and will only add more stress and congestion to the area. Is it not possible to develop projects that will enhance, not detract, from this historic district ? EDITH SCHMIDT Resident Victorian District Savannah Savannah entering post-renaissance period Your Sunday article about Rousakis Riverfront Plaza brought back many memories. It’s hard to imagine what River Street looked like before the renovation. Fortunately for Savannah, a group of citizens, under the leadership of John P. Rousakis, saw our city’s rich history as her greatest asset. This w

What we’re losing when we say goodbye to alt weeklies, the rebels of journalism

They wrote about rock music and marijuana, when those were actually daring things to write about. They used profanity sometimes, when even sometimes was rude and shocking. In the back, past the ads for head shops, porn theaters and escort services, there were classified listings that featured a strange code of longing and desire: “ SWM seeks SWF for LT relationship, light S&M.” “Alternative” weeklies flowered in the 1970s in just about every American city, large and small. They were the alternative to the strait- laced establishment press and the successors to the ragtag “underground” papers that had raged against the Vietnam War. Less angry and more professional than their forebears, they still raged against authority when a new edition dropped outside the coffeehouse or club. Free- distribution alt weeklies — all those New Timeses and Real Papers — aren’t quite dead yet, but the fraternity is in some distress. The Boston Phoenix checked out in 2013. Battle of the Hot Springs Gamblers

By Orval E. Allbritton 8/18/2017 • Wild West Magazine Major S.A. Doran’s gang ambushed Frank ‘Boss Gambler’ Flynn and two of his brothers in February 1884, triggering an exchange as deadly as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Most people who traveled to Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the 1880s did so to soak in the mineral baths in hopes of improving their physical health. Not so Samuel Alexander Doran , native Kentuckian and ex-Confederate major. In late fall 1883 Doran , who seldom visited a place without having some kind of confrontation (often deadly), was en route from New Orleans to the spa town in the Ouachita Mountains in hopes of improving his financial health. A dishonest gambler willing to back his card play with gunplay, Doran had broken the law in a string of towns from Kentucky to Texas. He had left more than a few places on bad terms and was lucky to have spent relatively little time behind bars. It was in New Orleans that Doran had met Jim Lane. Lane had owned and operate

Groundbreaking For Luxury Apartments On The Platinum Mile

Image
HARRISON, NY – A 421- unit luxury rental community is being built on the site of two former office buildings along the I-287 corridor once a mecca for businesses. The apartment building on Corporate Park Drive will have retail on the first floor and an in- building parking garage . Amenities will include a club room, fitness center, kid’s playroom, pet spa, bike lounge, craft room, co-working lounge and pool. The Carraway development is another example of an ongoing trend of repurposing vacant office buildings along Westchester’s Platinum Mile into residential and retail uses, including a fitness center on what was once the site of The Journal News building in Harrison and plans for a Wegmans supermarket on a former office building site on Corporate Park Drive . Efforts to landmark 114-year-old Nomad building scuttled by LPC

Efforts on part of local elected officials and preservationists to landmark a 114-year-old Beaux Arts building in Nomad have been scuttled by the Landmarks Preservation Commission . Last month, State Senators Brad Holyman and Liz Krueger wrote to the LPC to consider landmarking the Kaskel & Kaskel Building at 316 Fifth Avenue, which is slated to be replaced by a 40- story condo building designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox . This week Senator Holyman ’s office shared the LPC’s response with Curbed. In it, LPC Chair, Meenakshi Srinivasan says the Commission deemed the building ineligible in three previous studies of the neighborhood, and then detailed the Commission’s reasonings against designation. The prominent changes the Commission identified include , “alternations at the roofline including the removal of a prominent historic cornice on two facades, and extensive changes at the ground floor,” which the Commission said, “substantially reduced the historic integrity of the Kaskel

Queens mоther, disabled daughter nоt evicted оver landlоrd's 'meritless' lawsuit

A Queens landlord ’s quest to evict a cigarette- puffing single mom аnd her disabled daughter have gone up in smoke. For three уears, rent-controlled tenant Lуnn Blue had a case hanging over her, alleging she was a nuisance who needed to leave the Ridgewood apartment where she grew up. Blue not onlу smoked, but also had people constantlу coming аnd going аnd left trash, according to the case filed bу landlord Milena Jovic . A Queens jurу sided with Jovic in 2015 аnd Blue said the verdict put her оn a verge of a breakdown. Thе trial judge threw out the verdict, аnd the landlord appealed. But last week, three appellate judges ruled the trial judge was right to tоss the jurу decision. It was “like a mountain was lifted оff me,” Blue, 49, tоld the Dailу News оn Fridaу. “It felt like validation, уou know. Somebodу heard me.” Jovic had accused Blue of smoking marijuana аnd cigarettes. Blue insisted she onlу used tоbacco — never pot — аnd exhaled out the window with a fan blowing. S
