Judge grants bail in Athens transgender murder case
A Western Judicial Circuit judge this week granted bail to a 21-year-old transgender person who authorities say shot and killed a member of a rival transgender group in June at an Athens apartment complex . Rayquann Deonte Jernigan , 17, who was known to friends by the chosen name of Ava Le’Ray Barrin, was killed June 25 by a single gunshot allegedly fired by 21-year-old Jalen Breon Brown in the parking lot of Riverview Apartments on College Avenue, according to police. Police said the shooting occurred due to a feud between two groups of transgender people. Brown’s defense attorney Edward Brumby said his client was granted a $100,000 bond because he had no serious felonies and was not considered to be a flight risk. While free on bond, Brown must remain under house arrest and wear an ankle bracelet, according to bond restrictions imposed Monday by an Athens- Clarke County Magistrate Court judge .
