Where Do Most Renters Want To Live — And Where Are They Trying To Escape?

Image
Unable to commit. Fear of missing out on something else (#FOMO). Not ready to settle down. No, we're not referring to your ex. Renters also often get a bad rap for being more flighty than their homeowner peers. And it isn't completely unfounded. Nearly two-thirds of renters, about 64%, plan to settle down in a different city, according to an Apartment List report . So where do they want to go? And, perhaps more importantly, where do they want to leave? The rental website surveyed about 24,000 renters, nearly two-thirds of whom were millennials, and then dug into its own internal data for the report. Apartment List looked at 50 large metros across the country for the report. It turns out renters in the priciest metros on the coasts, such as New York and San Francisco, and in inland cities where costs are rising rapidly, like Denver and Austin, TX, are the most eager to move. Folks in colder climes where there aren't as many good- paying job opportunities , like Milwaukee...

A Cedar Ridge Apartments tenant shows a respirator she claims she sometimes needs due to alleged mold issues at the south Sacramento apartment complex . Code Enforcement is continuing to inspect the complex to determine if there are violations. PHOTO BY MICHAEL MOTT Nancy Avalos watched as her 5- and 8-year-old daughters danced and chased each other. Their laughter filled the living room. “My daughters don’t want to move out,” Avalos said in Spanish. Her voice broke. “I feel like I’ve let them down.” Avalos moved to Cedar Ridge Apartments six years ago. After sharing a living room of an apartment together, the single mother wanted to give her three daughters room to play and moved to a place they could call their own. But now the family is moving out of its two- bedroom apartment , after Avalos’ monthly rent rose from $802 to $1,086. For Avalos and her neighbors, sharp rent and utility bill increases hit the past two months as the property owner, Torrance- based Cedar Ridge Apa...

View Full Caption Landmarks Preservation Commission MANHATTAN —  Millennials, be forewarned before moving to the Big Apple: You'll need a roommate, you'll likely pay at least $1,000 a month, and don't bet on settling in Manhattan. Nearly 72 percent of Millennials shared their home with someone other than their partner in 2016, according to a report from New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer . And now is the time of year that many of these young New Yorkers are searching for new digs. The third week of August tends to the busiest single week for renters because of the flood of college students coming to New York and recent grads starting new jobs in September, according to the roommate- search app SpareRoom . The city’s streets around universities such as NYU, Columbia and Barnard will soon be cordoned off on Aug. 27 for the annual rite of “move-in day,” wh...

Scuttlebiz: Mom-and-pop closes while chains remain the same

Funny how your tastes change. There once was a time – back when Coolio actually was cool – when I desperately wanted to live in a town with an Applebee’s . I now reside in a metro area with five, and I’m more concerned that a hole-in-the-wall joint like Silla Cafe is closing. The Broad Street eatery , whose teriyaki chicken has been beloved by downtown denizens for more than two decades, is calling it quits next month. Owned and operated by Felton and Tae Mitchell , the literal “mom-and-pop” restaurant serves its last dish at 855 Broad St. on Sept. 14. “We had fun, but we’re ready to retire now,” Tae said. “We’ve been talking about retiring for a couple years now.” She said that decision to retire was hastened, however, by a steep increase in their rent. “It’s almost double,” she said in a phone interview. Last year the building was purchased by Rafik “Rafi” Bassali , a young real estate investor who is becoming somewhat of a downtown property mogul . The owner of The Swank Company...

Pleasanton council to consider confirming new smoking restrictions for apartments | News

The Pleasanton City Council is set Tuesday to consider final approval of a proposed ordinance to implement stringent smoking regulations for rental apartments across the city. On track to take effect early next year, the new restrictions would include banning smoking inside individual units , on balconies and patios, in all indoor and outdoor common areas and within 25 feet of those locations at apartment complexes under single ownership with two or more leased units. The council gave unanimous support to the proposed ordinance during a first reading in June, but asked city staff to do more research on how to handle medical marijuana before giving final approval . Under the recommendation from city staff, the ordinance would allow medical marijuana smoking inside apartment units "if tenant provides landlord written documentation that tenant needs it for medical purposes , no alternative means of delivery or ingestion are available and tenant is unable to smoke o...

Residents Say Rent Prices are Going Up by $300 a Month for Moldy, Cockroach-Infested Apartments

SACRAMENTO -- Would you pay hundreds more a month to live in conditions like this? That's just what dozens of renters at the Cedar Ridge Apartments say they're being asked to do. "Her name is Maria Godinez. They're raising her rent over $300, and she's struggling to pay the rent now," Godinez said in Spanish with the help of a translator. Now the one bedroom, one bathroom apartment she's lived in with her three girls for six years is in the $700s but on June 1, the pocketbook punch for the same unit will be $1,050, plus utilities. The change comes at an especially bad time for the five members of the Luna family who share a two-bedroom unit. "Right now, yeah, because my brother and I, we got let go from our jobs because our work permits expired , so we're not working right now," said Cedar Ridge tenant Claudia Luna . "It's too much, we don't have all the things that we need for the rent to be increased," said tenant Deana J...

Find out which NYC neighborhoods are the best in show for dog-lovers

Image
Photo: Robert Clark Finding the perfect apartment, in the perfect neighborhood, and at the perfect price in NYC can often feel like a Sisyphean task — let alone finding one that allows dogs. But knowing where to look is half the battle. The listing site StreetEasy partnered with Rover, the country’s largest dog-walker network, to compile a list of the top NYC dog-friendly neighborhoods. It was based on a neighborhood’s percentage of pet-friendly listings on StreetEasy, the the number of available dog walkers listed on Rover, how many vets were in a given neighborhood, and, of course, any dog parks nearby . Citywide, Battery Park City in Manhattan was named the “top dog” for renters with canines, as 63 percent of the neighborhood’s listing’s are pet-friendly, according to StreetEasy. DUMBO in Brooklyn claimed the number two spot, thanks to the area’s impressive number of dog parks — seven in total. Manhattan’s most expensive ‘hood, Tribeca, rounded out the top three. Over a quarter ...

As Trump ranted and rambled in Phoenix, his crowd slowly thinned

President Trump gave a contentious speech at a campaign rally in Phoenix on Aug. 22, attacking the media, GOP senators and "obstructionist" Democrats. Here are the highlights. (Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post) PHOENIX — Just before President Trump strolled onto the rally stage on Tuesday evening, four speakers took turns carefully denouncing hate , calling for unity and ever so subtly assuring the audience that the president is not racist. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson proclaimed that “our lives are too short to let our differences divide us.” Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr ., led everyone in singing a few lines of “How Great Thou Art .” Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed for the politically and racially divided nation and asked the Lord to shut the mouths of “those in this country who want to divide, who want to preach hate.” And Vice President Pence declared that “ President Trump believes with all his heart … that love for Amer...
