Athens judge grants bail to suspect in transgender woman’s murder case

Jalen Breon Brown, 21, who allegedly shot and killed Atlanta transwoman Ava Le’Ray Barrin outside an Athens, Georgia, apartment complex , is out on bond. Brown, who is also transgender, was granted bail this week by a Western Judicial Circuit judge , according to the Athens Banner-Herald. According to Athens- Clarke County police , Brown shot 17-year-old Barrin at the Riverview Apartments complex on College Avenue on June 25 following a feud between two groups of transgender individuals. Defense attorney Edward Brumby said Brown was granted a $100,000 bond because there was no flight risk and no serious felonies on Brown’s record. While out, Brown is under house arrest and must wear an ankle bracelet. Police told the Banner that both Brown and Barrin were at the apartment complex visiting friends , and the initial argument that started the deadly incident was between friends of the two. Carriage Hill Apartments Building 12 Damaged By Fire

The fire at Building 12 was due to electrical wires in the building. The fire source was reportedly located in apartment 1213, an Athens Fire Department report stated . Arson is not suspected in the case. Update 2/28/17 @ 12 p.m. The Ohio State Fire Marshal is still investigating the origin of the Carriage Hill Apartment fire , but has linked a natural gas leak in Building 12 to the fire, according to spokesperson Kelly Stincer . Update 2/27/17 @ 6:16 p.m.  The report from the Athens Fire Department estimates damage from the fire at the Carriage Hill Apartments to be more than $2 million. A Western Judicial Circuit judge this week granted bail to a 21-year-old transgender person who authorities say shot and killed a member of a rival transgender group in June at an Athens apartment complex . Rayquann Deonte Jernigan , 17, who was known to friends by the chosen name of Ava Le’Ray Barrin, was killed June 25 by a single gunshot allegedly fired by 21-year-old Jalen Breon Brown in the parking lot of Riverview Apartments on College Avenue, according to police. Police said the shooting occurred due to a feud between two groups of transgender people. Brown’s defense attorney Edward Brumby said his client was granted a $100,000 bond because he had no serious felonies and was not considered to be a flight risk. Soaring trash fees for L.A. condos and apartment buildings spark outrage

El Sereno resident Scott Toland is another unhappy customer of L.A.’s new refuse and recycling program. Toland recently learned that the monthly trash bill at the 10- unit condominium complex where he lives could double — at a minimum. And that’s only if his homeowner association cuts back on regular trash pickup . The reason? An assortment of extra fees, all backed by Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City Council as part of RecycLA. Universal Waste Systems , the neighborhood’s designated refuse hauler , sent Toland an estimate indicating the company would charge $43.30 a month to open the gate to the complex, which requires a remote control clicker , for the property’s regular trash. The company added the same $43.30 “access charge” for recycling pickup.
