Six years ago, Mike Brown and Casey Lynch stood on Downtown Boise ’s 8th Street and wondered: Why don’t more people live here? Downtown seemed to have everything that a growing percentage of Americans wanted in a place to live. “I mean, there’s all kinds of jobs. Motorists who use North Main Street to travel between downtown Fort Worth and the Stockyards should be prepared to use a detour — for roughly the next three years. Starting at 3 a.m. Saturday, North Main Street will be closed in both directions between Northeast Seventh and 11th streets — not far from LaGrave Field and the Coyote Drive-In theater. Traffic will be detoured to Commerce Street and delays for drivers are expected to be minimal. The reason? Workers will be building a new bridge as part of the nearly $ 1 billion Panther Island project that will eventually carry North Main Street traffic over a re-routed portion of the Trinity River. The bridge will be built over dry land so that when the money is available to re-route the river, the road will already be in place. Groundbreaking for Mobile's Meridian at the Port apartment complex on Wednesday was accompanied by new images illustrating backers' claims that it will be a transformative project for downtown. In the renderings, the five-story, 267- unit development is a large and distinctive presence on the east side of Water Street, a location that will make it one of the first landmarks seen by visitors arriving via I-165. Developer National Resources has for several years been studying different office, retail and residential schemes for an underused corporate campus designed in the 1960s for International Business Machines Corp. in East Fishkill, N.Y. But now, as National Resources moves to close on a deal to buy a 300-acre site, the Greenwich, Conn.- based developer is recognizing that housing has got to be a central component of the plan. Firm principals Lynne Ward and Joseph Cotter recognize low rents are the best way to lure millennials and others away from New York City, about a 90-minute drive away. National Resources is paying an undisclosed price for the land from California- based semiconductor company Globalfoundries , which purchased IBM’s semiconductor business in 2015 and still runs a slimmed down operation at the East Fishkill site that employs around 1,700 workers. (AP) - A fired dishwasher shot and killed a chef and held a "small number" of people hostage for about three hours before he was shot by police at a crowded restaurant in a tourist-heavy area of downtown Charleston , South Carolina, on Thursday, authorities and one of the restaurant's owners said. The hostages were freed with no injuries, Mayor John Tecklenburg said. The shooting took place at Virginia's restaurant on the usually crowded King Street , a line of shops and nice dining that caters to both tourists and residents in South Carolina's largest and most historic city. Tecklenburg quickly said the shooting was "the act of a disgruntled employee" and not a terrorist attack or a hate crime in a city where nine black church members were killed by a white man two years ago. The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 5:15 a.m. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked people to pray for a young Australian boy who is missing after a vehicle attack on a popular Barcelona promenade that killed 13 people. Turnbull said Saturday that the boy's mother was badly injured and is in a hospital following Friday's attack at the Las Ramblas promenade . Turnbull says the boy's family is searching for him. He did not release the boy's name.
