10 cheap-eats spots in Baltimore that offer more than just crab cakes

Image
Diners enjoy lunch at Tortilleria Sinaloa, which has top-notch tacos in tortillas made the right way — by hand. The unassuming storefront in Fells Point is one of several cheap-eats destinations in a city suddenly flush with award-winning chefs. (Doug Kapustin/For The Washington Post) Baltimore is that rare city with a dish so fundamental to its culture that the food’s name is an answer to a crossword puzzle. But if the crab cake is Charm City’s calling card, it can also be a cross to bear for those planning to open a restaurant there. The chef who dares to ignore the crab cake is the chef who risks losing the tourist searching for Baltimore’s signature dish, typically built with Chesapeake jumbo -lump crab, saltine cracker crumbs , a mayo binder and, of course, Old Bay. “You will find that in many restaurants there is a crab cake,” says Suzanne Loudermilk, restaurant critic for the Baltimore Sun. “It’s just part of our cuisine. Woody Allen Fans Should Book a Stay in This Florida Hotel Immediately and Here's Why

Creating a hotel is a lot like making a Hollywood film—at least that’s what Edward Walson thinks . The successful Hollywood producer used his knack for filmmaking—determining location, defining an experience, and paying attention to detail—to build and open the Royal Blues Hotel in Deerfield, Florida in 2014. And like creating a great movie, collaboration is key, which led Walson to ask close pal Woody Allen for help in sorting out some final details for his property. While Allen and his projects are constantly making headlines —he is currently working on a six- episode television series for Amazon with Miley Cyrus entitled Crisis in Six Scenes ; his 1950s film Wonder Wheel, with Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake, is set to be released in December; and, perhaps most surprisingly of all, he just cast Selena Gomez in his next film—his minor involvement in the hospitality industry has never really been discussed. “We met 12 years ago at a cocktail party and became friends,” Walson...

San Pedro preps for new midrise apartment development near waterfront

Demolition begins this week on a downtown San Pedro block that will be transformed into a seven- story apartment building that many hope will boost patronage for area shops, restaurants and the waterfront now beginning to take shape. Officials will mark the start of demolition at an informal groundbreaking at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at 550-560 S. Palos Verdes St . A more formal ceremony will be held in the coming weeks, according to the developer. Demolition is expected to take about a month and construction of the new 375-unit building should be complete in about three years, with the opening anticipated for 2020. It’s one of several residential developments planned to be built in and around the downtown San Pedro area over the next few years. Originally under the hands of Omninet Capital, the project was sold to Holland Partner Group in June for $24.5 million. Holland also is in exclusive negotiations to redevelop San Pedro ’s closed county courthouse just blocks away. Fewer, bigger...

House Tour: Vintage '60s Fabric Attic Apartment

Name: Terra Zosel Location: Kenwood Neighborhood, Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Rented 6 months The story of Terra's apartment is multi-fold. Her home occupies the attic of her grandparents' house where she lives as caretaker to her grandmother. Her grandparents purchased the home in the 1960s from a couple who relocated from Minneapolis to the significantly warmer state of Florida. Little information is known about those earlier owners or what the "genie bottle" room was used for, but Terra does know that it remained largely untouched from how the former resident — an artist — left it. As a child, Terra and her cousins often visited their grandparent's attic — it was the play room, the place for children to escape to, explore and stay out of the way of the adults in the rest of the house. Years later, various grandchildr...
