View Full Caption Landmarks Preservation Commission MANHATTAN —  Millennials, be forewarned before moving to the Big Apple: You'll need a roommate, you'll likely pay at least $1,000 a month, and don't bet on settling in Manhattan. Nearly 72 percent of Millennials shared their home with someone other than their partner in 2016, according to a report from New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer . And now is the time of year that many of these young New Yorkers are searching for new digs. The third week of August tends to the busiest single week for renters because of the flood of college students coming to New York and recent grads starting new jobs in September, according to the roommate- search app SpareRoom . The city’s streets around universities such as NYU, Columbia and Barnard will soon be cordoned off on Aug. 27 for the annual rite of “move-in day,” wh...

One Manhattan Square, Extell Development’s condo project on the Lower East Side waterfront , is attempting to attract would-be residents with an extensive amenities package that includes unusual offerings such as an adult treehouse and infrared saunas. The 800 ft. tall tower, which has 100,000 s/f of outdoor and indoor amenities, is designed to direct residents away from a solitary existence. “People want to be friends with their neighbors. This isn’t the city of many years past when you quickly get out of the elevator and no one says ‘hi’ to each other. We really thought about creating a community and a sense of community,” said Anna Zarro, Extell’s senior vice president and director of residential sales and leasing. The amenities package for the project is extensive. It includes a full- sized basketball court , a two- lane bowling alley , a squash court, a swimming pool, a golf simulator, a fitness center, a spa with a Turkish bath and private treatment rooms , a theater and perfo...

‘Deadbeat’ doggy dad sued for $32,000 in pet support

You’ve heard about a deadbeat dad — but what about a deadbeat doggy daddy ? A Manhattan marketing director is suing her surfer bro ex-husband, claiming he’s failed to pay more than $32,000 for the upkeep of their pet dog, a female fawn- colored English bulldog named Lola , since they split in 2012. Sarah Bronilla, 39, married Josh Rosen , co-founder of the Soho lifestyle company Saturdays Surf , in 2006. The couple broke up a few years later and signed a separation agreement in September 2012, according to Bronilla’s Manhattan Supreme Court suit . Since then Rosen hasn’t paid a penny to support Lola while Bronilla’s dished out $18,000 for dog food, $4,671.56 in vet bills and $12,000 for other expenses, according to court papers. Bronilla “as of Sept. 10, 2012 has always and exclusively paid for all costs and expenses with respect to the upkeep of and dog food for Lola,” the single mom sniffs in court papers. Rosen, who describes himself as a “perpetual child” in a 2010 interview, wa...

Bathroom design shifts with the times

Human size is the basis of architectural and interior design standards . According to Scientific American, over the past 150 years, the average height of humans in industrialized nations has increased by about 4 inches. Overall, the reasons for this are better food supply, improved diet and the control of diseases. When you visit a home built in the 18th century, ceilings are obviously lower and door frames are smaller. Depending on the style of the era, fireplace openings, room size and window size might also be more condensed and feel off compared to today's standards. Therefore, remodels conducted in historic homes or apartment buildings are exceptionally challenging. We are attempting to deliver modern conveniences to homes that were originally designed for humans of different heights. I am imagining a house in Cavendish on Prince Edward Island in Canada where L.M. Montgomery wrote her famous tales about the red- haired orphan Anne of Gre...
