A North Carolina agency says a device which uses radioactive materials to test soil density during construction is missing. WRAL-TV in Raleigh reports officials with North Carolina Radiation Protection say the device could pose a health and safety risk if handled inappropriately. Officials said the device disappeared from a private contractor at an apartment job site in Garner and was reported to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services around 8 p.m. Thursday. The gauge has a stainless steel handle sticking out of the top and a radiation symbol on the handle. A description of the material appears on a plate attached to the outside of the gauge, and each source of radioactive material is sealed in a stainless steel capsule . ___ Information from: WRAL-TV, http://www.wral.com Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. Editor's Note — For complete coverage of the Eclipse of the Century go to cnn.com/eclipse. Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) — Three minutes before darkness fell in the middle of a hot South Carolina afternoon , Angela Picot and her sisters noticed that the crickets had started chirping. At 2:40 p.m. ET, one minute before the sun was completely blocked by the moon, the streetlights at the South Carolina State Capitol complex turned on. Those gathered started cheering as the city of Columbia plunged into complete darkness and the sun's corona became visible to the naked eye. "That was worth the entire trip," Picot said. "It was totally worth it." When Picot saw the path of the 2017 solar eclipse on NASA's website last October, she knew she was heading to South Carolina . A high school engineering teacher in Smithfield, Virginia, Picot drove six hours on Friday, August 18, to her sister's place in Columbia, bringing her 14-year-old daughter Kylie Saw...

Aug. 22 (UPI) -- A pair of North Carolina residents said they found a venomous copperhead snake and a black snake inside their apartment -- and one might still be inside. Alycia Williams said her roommate at the Vie at Raleigh apartment complex spotted the copperhead snake and the black snake slithering into her bedroom early Saturday morning . "I guess they were both right there and they killed one of them because they were trying to get the broom and sweep them outside, but the other one went up under my door and came in here," Williams told WTVD -TV. She said the dead snake was the copperhead, while the black snake might still be hiding inside the apartment. Williams, who speculated the snakes may have come in from a wooded area behind the complex, said she and her roommate have spread moth balls and "Snake-A-Way" repellent around their residence in the hopes of driving out the serpentine intruder. Managers at the apartment complex said animal control was...

Funny how your tastes change. There once was a time – back when Coolio actually was cool – when I desperately wanted to live in a town with an Applebee’s . I now reside in a metro area with five, and I’m more concerned that a hole-in-the-wall joint like Silla Cafe is closing. The Broad Street eatery , whose teriyaki chicken has been beloved by downtown denizens for more than two decades, is calling it quits next month. Owned and operated by Felton and Tae Mitchell , the literal “mom-and-pop” restaurant serves its last dish at 855 Broad St. on Sept. 14. “We had fun, but we’re ready to retire now,” Tae said. “We’ve been talking about retiring for a couple years now.” She said that decision to retire was hastened, however, by a steep increase in their rent. “It’s almost double,” she said in a phone interview. Last year the building was purchased by Rafik “Rafi” Bassali , a young real estate investor who is becoming somewhat of a downtown property mogul . The owner of The Swank Company...

JENKINSVILLE (AP) — For the better part of a decade, thousands of people showed up in this town on the shores of Lake Monticello and got to work on a project that was sure to change its fortunes. As a pair of nuclear reactors rose behind the gates of the V.C. Summer power plant , a town of fewer than 100 residents suddenly had a few thousand. Campsites and restaurants sprang up before long to meet the new need, banking on a few more years of construction work and decades of maintenance to come. The boom in this rural corner of Fairfield County coincided with rising hopes in Winnsboro, the county seat, which is 25 minutes east on winding backroads. South Carolina Electric & Gas was spending billions of dollars to build two of America's first new nuclear reactors since the 1980s, and county officials expected a property tax windfall — tens of millions of dollars every year for decades. They imagined new fortunes for one of the state's smallest counties, a place with a sh...
