Woodland Hills Post Office moving, apartment complex proposed for site

WOODLAND HILLS >> The nearly 40-year-old Woodland Hills Post Office may be stamped out, its cancellation marked May 31, 2017. The west San Fernando Valley post office , a mail and package drop for streams of residents and workers in and around Warner Center, has ended its lease and must find a nearby location. An Agoura Hills developer , meanwhile, has applied to replace the 130,000-square- foot post office with hundreds of high-end apartments. “Our lease is good through May 31, 2017,” Richard Maher, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman , said. “But after that we’re going to relocate, because the property owner wants to develop and won’t renew our lease.” A replacement post office , he added, would be found as close to the current post office as possible. Its more than 2, 500 post office boxes would be retained. The Woodland Hills post office opened in June 1977 at 22121 Clarendon Street on a 4.2- acre block west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard , just south of the 101 Freeway. Its 1...

Riverview Lofts apartment complex receives site plan approval

Image
In a split vote, the Riverhead Town Board approved both the site plan and the special permit application for Georgica Green Ventures’ proposed 116-unit mixed-use apartment complex Tuesday night . The board also approved an environmental study submitted by the applicant and stated that the project will have “no significant adverse environmental impacts .” The vote was three in favor, one opposed and one abstaining. Councilman Tim Hubbard cast the no vote, and Councilwoman Jodi Giglio abstained . “There’s a lot of issues with this project that I’m concerned about,” Mr. Hubbard said, citing parking, a proposed 30- year Industrial Development Agency tax abatement , and the impact the apartments might have on school enrollment. Ms. Giglio said she asked the town ethics board for an opinion on whether she should abstain, since she is an owner of the Summerwind Square apartments downtown , and they recommended she abstain. The five-story project, Riverview Lofts , is on the southwest co...

Readers Write: Good old days, Charlottesville, charitable gambling, rent controls, travel to Vietnam

I read Michael Nesset ’s article (“The good old days ... were, in ways,” Opinion Exchange, Aug. 13) and was not quite sure how to take it. I, too, grew up in a small town, but my recollections of small-town life in the 1950s and ’60s are not quite so benign or so happy. I, too, remember the soda fountain with the marble-topped bar and daytime baseball games on the radio. I also remember that my hometown was 100 percent white and nearly 100 percent Christian . Needless to say, if you weren’t either of those, you didn’t really belong there, and those who did fit those criteria were eager to let you know that. I think that from the perspective of someone nonwhite or non-Christian, the nostalgia for small-town life is a bad dream. I still see rural areas and small towns maintaining those attitudes, hence the red-blue split between cities and nonurban areas. I can see how the “ make America great again” crowd yearns for the days when white Christian men made the rules and made all of t...

WARREN'S NEXT town hall — ARROYO FIRED — Kennedy charges to be DISMISSED?

08/25/2017 08:02 AM EDT By Rebecca Morin ( rmorin@politico.com ; @RebeccaMorin_) and Charlie Mahtesian ( cmahtesian@politico.com ; @PoliticoCharlie) TGIF, MASSACHUSETTS. Mostly cloudy with a high of 73 today. Story Continued Below I'm Rebecca Morin and I'm filling in along with Charlie Mahtesian this week while Lauren is on vacation in Minnesota. This is our last day, but Lauren will be back Sept. 5. WARREN'S NEXT TOWN HALL: Sen. Elizabeth Warren is heading to Rep. Niki Tsongas' district on Friday for a town hall in Concord, her 13th town hall of the year. The 3rd District isn ’t exactly Warren Country: The senator lost the district narrowly in 2012, Gov. Charlie Baker carried it in 2014 and so did Republican Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez in 2013. It's home to a rare open- seat congressional race in 2018, now that Tsongas has announced she will not seek reelection. Tsongas and Warren are allies: Tsongas was the first major political player to endorse Warre...

(Photo: Jessica Tezak, Special to the News Sentinel) Buy Photo The rain never came in time. Records released this week show authorities battling the deadly Sevier County wildfires looked to an expected downpour that came too late for salvation as crews struggled in a desperate tug-of-war with skyscraper-sized flames the night of Nov. 28, 2016. As the blaze approached the city limits, authorities knew the rain wouldn't arrive for another 12 hours. West Seattle Blog… | CAMP SECOND CHANCE: With operator change ahead, residents plead to keep their camp drug

Image
(WSB photo: Tents and tiny houses at Camp Second Chance) By Tracy Record West Seattle Blog editor The Camp Second Chance residents who gathered Wednesday afternoon to hear from city reps and their future fiscal agent/operator had one main question: Will they be allowed to keep their self-imposed rules under new management – particularly, no drugs and alcohol? They did not get an immediate commitment from Sharon Lee of the Low- Income Housing Institute , which is expected to assume the city contract that is currently held by Patacara Community Services , withdrawing from its management of the city- sanctioned camp after questions about the status of privately donated money , as first reported here last Friday. At multiple times during Wednesday’s meeting, held under a canopy on the camp’s fenced site at the city-owned Myers Way Parcels , Lee said it was too soon for her to be able to say how things will work once her organization takes over, expected to happen at the start of Septe...
