Behind the luxury: Turmoil and shoddy care inside five-star addiction treatment centers

Image
The advertisements are everywhere. On television, a sleek black sedan pulls up to a sprawling estate with a rolling green lawn as a mother recounts how Recovery Centers of America saved her child from drugs. On Facebook, radio, highway billboards, and commuter trains, people are urged to call the company’s instantly memorable hot line : 1-800-RECOVERY. The marketing blitz and an infusion of private equity money have helped make Recovery Centers of America into the self-described fastest- growing addiction treatment provider in the country. Launched less than three years ago by a high- end real estate developer , it’s part of a rush of entrepreneurs who see opportunity in the treatment business as the opioid crisis sweeps the country. Advertisement But an investigation by STAT and The Boston Globe has uncovered evidence of shoddy care and turmoil inside the walls of the company’s two Massachusetts treatment centers . This report is based on interviews with more than a dozen fo...

Follow KDKA-TV : Facebook | Twitter RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The woman killed when a car plowed into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist rally in Virginia was described as a “ true American hero ” who died doing what she loved — standing up for people. Two state troopers also died when their helicopter crashed in a wooded area while deployed as part of a large- scale police effort to contain Saturday’s violence. They were remembered for their commitment and love of their jobs. Heather Heyer, 32, was among the hundreds of protesters who had gathered in Charlottesville to decry what was believed to be the largest gathering of white supremacists in a decade — including neo-Nazis, skinheads and Ku Klux Klan members — who descended on the city to rally against plans to remove a Confederate statue. Felicia Correa, a longtime friend of Heyer, said the slain woman died standing up for people of color and called her a “ true American hero .” She said she spoke with Heyer’s mother,...

Lack of Bay Area housing prompts rise in ‘super commuters’

As the housing crisis has grown across California, the state has seen a rise in the number of “super commuters,” residents who commute longer hours to cities starved of affordable housing, including those in the Bay Area. While the number of jobs brought into the Bay Area has grown in recent years, the availability of housing has not matched this increase, according to State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley. People working in service-type jobs are not being paid wages that would allow them to afford housing in the cities where they are employed, forcing many to make long commutes to and from work each day, Skinner said. “Those are essential services, but then they’re driven out to living further and further away just to be able to afford somewhere to live,” Skinner said. Census data from 2015 reported San Francisco , Alameda and Contra Costa counties’ average commute times to be 31.7 minutes, 30.7 minutes and 35.3 minutes respectively — an increase from 2010, when the commute times for...

Fairfield Co loses jobs, a dream of changing its fortunes | News

JENKINSVILLE (AP) — For the better part of a decade, thousands of people showed up in this town on the shores of Lake Monticello and got to work on a project that was sure to change its fortunes. As a pair of nuclear reactors rose behind the gates of the V.C. Summer power plant , a town of fewer than 100 residents suddenly had a few thousand. Campsites and restaurants sprang up before long to meet the new need, banking on a few more years of construction work and decades of maintenance to come. The boom in this rural corner of Fairfield County coincided with rising hopes in Winnsboro, the county seat, which is 25 minutes east on winding backroads. South Carolina Electric & Gas was spending billions of dollars to build two of America's first new nuclear reactors since the 1980s, and county officials expected a property tax windfall — tens of millions of dollars every year for decades. They imagined new fortunes for one of the state's smallest counties, a place with a sh...
