Construction to resume on NW 17th St. apartments - News - Gainesville Sun

The plan is to have at least half of the apartment building completed by August 2018 and the entire project completed by January 2019. By Daniel Smithson Staff writer The outer shell of what will be student housing and a retail destination in midtown remains with few workers trying to complete it. Coral Gables- based Roger Development Group executives halted construction at the site of what will be Midtown Apartments, located at 104 NW 17th St ., because of plans to make interior changes. Oscar Roger Jr ., vice president of the development group , said in construction when interior design changes occur, plumbing does as well. So while design changes were being ironed out, construction was slowed to avoid the costs of having people work in the meantime and potentially having to reroute plumbing again if more changes were made. But with those details now set, construction will resume within the next few weeks, Roger said. The plan is to have at least half of the apartment bu...

The old Herald-Sun building, located on Pickett Road, will soon be the home of self-storage units and office space.

The pressroom at the old Herald-Sun building will soon become self-storage units, and the rows of desks that made up the newsroom will once again become office space. More than a year after buying the former offices of The Herald-Sun at 2828 Pickett Road , Durham- based Ticon Properties is in the middle of an extensive renovation of the 27-year-old building. The newspaper originally moved from downtown into the Pickett Road building in 1990 before relocating to an office building near Northgate Mall in 2015. Ticon will retrofit the newspaper building to include 70,000 square feet of climate-controlled self-storage units, 60,000 square feet of office space and an additional 10,000 square feet of retail space. The renovations are likely to be completed next year. Ticon, which is owned by Jack McGhee, bought the building from Paxton Media Group , the former owner of The Herald-Sun, in July 2016 for $3.25 million. Ticon owns several apartment complexes and commercial spaces across grea...

3-story Mpls. apartment building evacuated after brick facade falls

Residents of a south Minneapolis apartment building will be out of their units for a least a couple of days after part of its brick facade fell to the ground Tuesday night . The building is owned by Stephen Frenz, one of the city’s biggest landlords. The city’s regulatory services division is seeking to revoke his license on the building and about 60 other apartment buildings because of his failure to disclose that Spiros Zorbalas , a banned landlord in Minneapolis, retains a financial interest in Frenz’s properties. Authorities were called to the three- story building on the 600 block of E. 16th Street around 11:45 p.m. after a 100- to 120-square-foot section of the facade fell and hit a balcony in the back and knocked down a power mast, said Minneapolis Fire Department spokesman Bryan Tyner . Residents were evacuated, and the Red Cross said it is helping 15 residents who were displaced. The collapse is under investigation. The city’s inspections department issued an order on W...

Garner considers $1.2M, 10-unit apartment development | Mason City & North Iowa

GARNER | The Garner City Council is hoping a new 10- unit apartment project will reduce the gap in the city’s housing market. At its Tuesday, Aug. 22, meeting, the council will consider accepting a proposal received from Echo Development Group of Cedar Falls earlier this month for the construction and operation of a $1.2 million 10- unit apartment building at 895 W. Eighth St. in Garner earlier this month. “We’re excited about it,” said Randy Lansing, Garner city administrator . According to Echo Development Group ’s proposal, the building will feature four three-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments. Each apartment will have a garage, a laundry room and 2½ bathrooms. The proposal, which was submitted during the city’s request for proposals period between June 15 and Aug. 3, was the only one it received, despite its incentives to attract developers. In June, the city of Garner began searching for “an experienced multi- family housing developer or operator” to partne...

Groundbreaking For Luxury Apartments On The Platinum Mile

HARRISON, NY – A 421- unit luxury rental community is being built on the site of two former office buildings along the I-287 corridor once a mecca for businesses. The apartment building on Corporate Park Drive will have retail on the first floor and an in- building parking garage . Amenities will include a club room, fitness center, kid’s playroom, pet spa, bike lounge, craft room, co-working lounge and pool. The Carraway development is another example of an ongoing trend of repurposing vacant office buildings along Westchester’s Platinum Mile into residential and retail uses, including a fitness center on what was once the site of The Journal News building in Harrison and plans for a Wegmans supermarket on a former office building site on Corporate Park Drive . New apartments spring up in north Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY -- Construction of new housing units on the city's north side is proceeding at a brisk pace this summer. No fewer than seven separate projects are either already completed or on the drawing board. The newest development, now under construction, is a 24- unit apartment building on Royston Court, between the former provincial land registry office and HMCS Griffin Naval Reserve . Red River Holdings is the developer. City hall has also received an application for a building permit to convert the old land registry office to an 8- unit apartment building . The location of the two projects is less than a block north of the former Superior Court of Justice on Camelot Street, which a Toronto developer plans to convert to a hotel. The application for a building permit is expected to be submitted soon. Elsewhere in the north core, Syncor Contracting is working on the third of three 12- unit apartment buildings...

Letters to the editor Wednesday

Generic apartments will create more stress The Victorian District is indeed a neighborhood. As a long-time resident, I have watched it grow in the 30 years that I’ve lived on East Bolton Street . I hope we can hang onto our neighborhood. Currently it is being buffeted by more and more vacation rentals and requests for new hotels. Now, we are confronted with a proposed large, generic apartment complex which is too big for the requested site and will only add more stress and congestion to the area. Is it not possible to develop projects that will enhance, not detract, from this historic district ? EDITH SCHMIDT Resident Victorian District Savannah Savannah entering post-renaissance period Your Sunday article about Rousakis Riverfront Plaza brought back many memories. It’s hard to imagine what River Street looked like before the renovation. Fortunately for Savannah, a group of citizens, under the leadership of John P. Rousakis, saw our city’s rich history as her greatest asset. This w...

Massive apartment project to change face of downtown Boca

Mizner 200 will be one of the largest construction projects in Boca Raton's downtown, offering three nine- story apartment buildings across 9 acres. There will be 384 new apartments and garages with 672 parking spaces. You’ll also see an overhauled stretch of Southeast Mizner Boulevard — inundated with new canopy trees, park space and benches along an 8-foot-wide, paver-laden sidewalk. It’s too early to say when construction will begin. But Mizner 200, at 200 SE Mizner Blvd ., will give the area a much-needed face-lift, some residents say. It’s the latest high- rise project coming to downtown Boca, among the fastest rising in Palm Beach County . “It’s an amazing project and one that I think Boca can stand behind in a very proud fashion,” said Marisela Catilla, a resident of Royal Palm Place just across the street. The city, which this week approved the project, said it’s a product of cooperation between Mizner 200’s developer, Coral Springs-based El- ad National Properties , a...

The long retail spine of Sydney Road, Brunswick, just north of Melbourne's CBD, was once a prosperous trading outpost on the way to the goldfields. These days it's a bohemian mix of variety stores, op shops, halal butchers and Lebanese bakeries. Take a side street to the west, however, and a different picture emerges. Sandwiched between Sydney Road and the Upfield train line is an area undergoing rapid and widespread transformation. Light industry is fast being replaced by mid- rise apartment buildings , their inhabitants attracted by the short commute into town and cheaper prices than in the city's south-east. The quality of these units is, on the whole, depressingly bad; think poor ventilation and bedrooms that "borrow" natural light (a weasel word for being dark and windowless). The occasional jazzy façade tries feebly to make up for otherwise cheap construction amid a chorus of greys. At ground level, carpark roller doors alternate with mean pocket garden...
