Rent control rumored to be driving apartment sales | News

Mountain View's rent- control program has already survived political and legal trials -- but what about the business test? An increasing number of apartment owners appear to be cashing out rather than working under the new restrictions. If the trend continues, some say it will lead to a cascade of redevelopment spearheaded by large corporate buyers . This scenario would result in older apartments being phased out and replaced with new housing that is exempt from rent control. Those looking at the data with a more critical eye point out that sales of apartment buildings are up throughout the South Bay, and that the number of buyers indicates a healthy interest in investing in Mountain View housing , regardless of rent control. To take one example, Fremont residents Ann and Paul Lethers decided in June to sell their 18-unit complex on Del Medio Avenue in Mountain View, which they created from separate purchases of two adjacent nine-unit buildings. They say they h...

Engineer Inspects Hunters Ridge Apartment Complex

An engineer was at the Hunters Ridge Apartments Monday afternoon , surveying the damage after a third- floor apartment collapsed during a party Friday night . . Joel Gillespie, who lives in the Hunters Ridge Apartment complex , was home Friday night when the apartment across the street collapsed. "It was just chaos everywhere. People were coming out, a few on stretchers, just people limping across the parking lot and it was just speechless, you don't know what to say about it," says Gillespie. He says it didn't seem real. "The debris inside the apartment was so thick that the firefighters, when they walked in the door, they had to step up on it because it was waist high, and then they had to duck to get under the doorway," says Gillespie. Mark Byerly is the consulting engineer called to the apartments Monday . He says overloading still seems to be the obvious cause, and the fact that those at the party were jumping to music only made it worse. ...

A mother and child. A deployed soldier. Several Ohio University students . They are among the 41 Carriage Hill Apartments residents who were affected by the fire that consumed Building 12 on Sunday afternoon. None of the residents lost their lives, but many of them lost everything else, including some pets. Eliza Holdcroft Scott and her 12-year-old son, Andrew, lost all of their belongings to the fire. She wasn’t home when the fire started and found out about it on Facebook. “I was on my way home from shopping with my parents and boyfriend in Belpre and I happened to look at Facebook,” she said, where she saw a post from her friend that talked about losing her car in a fire. Scott said it took her a moment to realize that her friend lived in the same apartment building as her. “I sent her a private message asking her if it was her apartment and she then proceeded to tell me the whole building was going to go down,” Scott said. She then realized her...

Bklyn. affordable housing plan faces delays due to de Blasio

Image
When Mayor de Blasio held a press conference in May 2014 to debut his new affordable housing plan , his full- color presentation touted a project called Spring Creek in Brooklyn. Spring Creek was flagged as a “case study” partnership between the city and developers to “create a strong, vibrant and self-sustaining neighborhood.” But on Friday, the bulk of that project remained a big, ugly vacant field of weeds and abandoned roadway in East New York. More than 1,500 of 1, 803 planned affordable units are now in a bureaucratic Twilight Zone — and may become less affordable as a result. “There is no progress from the progressive mayor ,” said the Rev. David Brawley, a leader of East Brooklyn Congregations , one of the groups sponsoring Spring Creek . Brawley said the delays to Spring Creek caused by the de Blasio administration are particularly ironic given that the mayor cited the project in his promise to build or preserve 200, 00...

2 children killed in fire at apartment complex in Overland Park :: WRAL.com

By Daniel Barnett OVERLAND PARK, KS — Authorities are searching for what caused a fire at an apartment complex that took the life of two young children early Tuesday morning . Fire crews were called at about 2:30 a.m. to the Colonial Gardens Apartments , located in the 8800 block of Broadmoor Court. While on the way to the scene, units received reports of victims trapped in the complex and immediately called for a second alarm. Firefighters say a family was on the bottom floor of the apartment complex when the fire started. They say an infant and a seven-year-old were able to make it out but a three-year-old and a five-year-old were killed in the flames. The mother of the children was taken to an area hospital with minor burns. The children's father was seen walking around the area, distraught over the loss of his children. Two men were also badly burned and had to jump from a second story unit to escape the flames. They were taken to an area hospital to treat their burns and the...

Holiday Homes in Ibiza: More regular inner city flights and earlier club openings mean it's becoming a year-round destination

Image
Not so long ago Ibiza had a reputation solely as a party island, but these days it’s far more diverse than that. The understated vibe means the superyachting crowds and celebrities can mingle with clubbers and young families, while sophisticated beach clubs and classy harbourside restaurants and bars provide plenty of posing opportunities. And with four flights a week now running from London City Airport , the number of tourists passing through has increased by 14.6 per cent since last year, reaching a record 7.1m in 2016. Flying two hours from London to a holiday island then staying in a city apartment might seem an unusual choice, but Ibiza Town is where many second home owners want to be. It has history, a chic St Tropez -style marina, beautiful beaches and the nightlife isn’t bad either. It’s a good indicator of how the Balearic Island has extended its season to become a serious contender to its sister, Majorca. “There are flights...

Stuart Gardyne: Who's afraid of Shelly Bay?

STANTIALL STUDIO/SUPPLIED OPINION: Here's a question: where do you take guests from out of town on a sunny weekend in Wellington City ? Chances are Shelly Bay isn 't at the top of your list. Not yet, that is. We now have a once-in-a-generation chance to create a modern and authentically Wellington destination that all of us will be able to enjoy. A laidback spot to enjoy a picnic, grab a coffee or simply relax and watch the world go by. That's why I'm so disappointed to see opposition from the Miramar Business Improvement District to the proposed plan. What they're doing in effect is trying to keep more Wellingtonians out of the area.
