NW Georgia Housing Authority seeks $1.3M planning grant to target East Rome improvements | Local News

The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority plans to submit another request for a Choice Neighborhood planning grant of up to $1.3 million dollars. If the planning grant is awarded, it would put the housing authority in line for a potential implementation grant of upwards of $30 million. The authority submitted an application in 2016 but there was a problem with the application and Camiros, the Chicago- based consulting firm that wrote last year’s grant, is rewriting the 2017 application at no additional cost to the authority. Camiros was paid $8,000 for the 2016 application. NWGHA Executive Director Sandra Hudson said the agency is seeking to redevelop the Maple Street- East 12th Street community in East Rome with the funds. As part of the planning grant , the authority had to choose a small project to undertake as an example of the type of work that could be accomplished to completely turn around a community, and has chosen to do a streetscape project along East 12th. Last year,...

Millions spent to 'preserve' Rio 2016's legacy

When Poliana Okimoto stepped onto the podium with a 10km open water Olympic bronze medal around her neck she thought her life was about to change forever. Gleefully accepting Brazil 's first ever swimming medal , the 34-year-old allowed herself to get caught up in euphoria sweeping the country. Fast forward 12 months , though, and things feel very different. After the athletes left Rio , so too did the optimism as political scandals, including millions of pounds of public money allegedly stolen in bribes for Olympic constructions projects , plunged the country into economic chaos.  Rio de Janeiro itself declared itself bankrupt just days after the Olympics closing ceremony , with no more money to pay suppliers to the Games, while hospitals, schools and the police have born the brunt of drastic cuts to public services . public money allegedly stolen in bribes for construction projects , which have plunged the country into economic chaos. Car-Friendly if Not Gawker-Friendly Buildings

That’s not the only message New Yorkers receive as we stand outside, say, the seven-foot- tall hedge running along East 46th Street that conceals a private 10,000-square- foot circular driveway for the residents of 50 United Nations Plaza . Another message we hear says: You’re on the wrong side of the red velvet rope , or, in this case, the green hedge. Photo A view of the building from East 56th Street . Credit Tony Cenicola/The New York Times These are private spaces — the public did not lose a park or a sidewalk bench for a driveway, but some of these spaces could have instead housed a restaurant or a shop, giving a New Yorker a reason to walk down the street and feel connected to the buildings towering above. Instead, a gate “sticks a big finger in people’s faces to say: ‘I’m better than you. I live here. I live in this luxury building with a giant gate that you can’t come past,’” said Richard Florida, the author of “The New Urban Crisis” (Basic, 2017). “It might make people pi...
