Craigslist apartment scams continue to be a problem in Cambridge with 27 reported rental scams through Oct. 17 of this year versus 31 total in 2015, according to police. People looking to move to the country, such as exchange students or those traveling to the U.S. on work visas, are frequent targets of these scams, making Cambridge’s transient university populations particularly vulnerable. “There’s certainly a steady diet of these crimes,” said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department . “Unfortunately, they are very difficult to investigate.” Warnick said part of the problem is that it can be difficult to figure out the location of a website or the origin of an email in order to identify a suspect. “The crimes are difficult to investigate as fraud over the Internet does not need a physical location, nor personnel, nor phones,” he said. “Internet fraud is disjointed, and spread ...
