Over 25 cats rescued from hoarder's Bridgewater apartment

BRIDGEWATER - Newborn kittens and pregnant cats were among more than two dozen felines rescued Wednesday from an abandoned Bridgewater apartment . Going on a tip, the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter at 100 Commons Way organized the rescue and is starting the legal process of obtaining ownership of the cats, said shelter manager Brian Bradshaw . "We weren't aware of the situation there; it took a tip from the condominium owner. I don't know how the neighbors didn't smell it," he said. When rescuers arrived, the air conditioner was off and the smell was overwhelming in the cramped space, he said. The name of the tenants as well as the condominium complex have not yet been released, Bradshaw said. "They're in trouble for much bigger things than leaving cats behind," he said. The Bridgewater Police said the case is being handled by SPCA officers. President of the Somerset SPCA Joe Biermann said the tenant will be charged with multiple counts of animal...

Zimmer: Vikings would ''like to'' keep three QBs on initial 53-man roster

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — As long as Sam Bradford stays healthy this season, the Minnesota Vikings won ’t be worried about their quarterback situation. There’s a lot of uncertainty behind Bradford on the depth chart, though. Teddy Bridgewater remains immersed in his rehabilitation program, of course, trying to push his knee back into playing shape. He’s on the physically unable to perform list, where he’ll likely start the regular season. So if the Vikings decide to keep a third-stringer on the active roster behind Bradford and backup Case Keenum , they’re currently looking at Taylor Heinicke or Mitch Leidner. Heinicke is the third-year project who went undrafted out of Old Dominion and has never taken a snap in an NFL regular-season game. He’s most famous for severing two tendons in his foot from an ill-fated kick through a glass pane of a door to his friend’s apartment that they were locked out of. Leidner is the local rookie who signed with the team on Sunday. He’s the only player in...

Trump signs bill expanding college assistance for veterans

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE Associated Press BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law an updated veterans' education bill that marks the largest expansion of college assistance for military veterans in a decade. The Forever GI Act immediately removed a 15- year time limit on the use of GI benefits. The measure also increases financial assistance for thousands serving in the National Guard and Reserve, building on a 2008 law that guaranteed veterans a full-ride scholarship to any in- state public university , or a similar cash amount to attend private colleges . Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin , who joined Trump for the signing, said the new law also provides benefits to Purple Heart recipients whose injuries forced them to leave the service. Benefits can also now be transferred to the eligible dependent of service members who are killed in the line of duty. Veterans would get additional payments for completing science, technology and ...

Converted Office Parks Try to Lure Millennials With Cheaper Rents

Developer National Resources has for several years been studying different office, retail and residential schemes for an underused corporate campus designed in the 1960s for International Business Machines Corp. in East Fishkill, N.Y. But now, as National Resources moves to close on a deal to buy a 300-acre site, the Greenwich, Conn.- based developer is recognizing that housing has got to be a central component of the plan. Firm principals Lynne Ward and Joseph Cotter recognize low rents are the best way to lure millennials and others away from New York City, about a 90-minute drive away. National Resources is paying an undisclosed price for the land from California- based semiconductor company Globalfoundries , which purchased IBM’s semiconductor business in 2015 and still runs a slimmed down operation at the East Fishkill site that employs around 1,700 workers.
