Fire destroys six apartments at Regency Park

Image
GUILDERLAND — Early Sunday morning, software programmer Premjeet Sougrakpam was at home, sleeping in his Regency Park apartment , as were his wife, her mother, and the couple’s two sons — one of them three years old and the other born just five days earlier.  They were awakened by a loud bang at about 4:30 a.m. When they ran to a back window to see if something was wrong, they saw flames outside, near their patio. Sougrakpam reached for a phone and called 911, while the women each grabbed one of the children. They made their way outside, where residents from the other nearby apartments were also gathering.  “I came barefooted, just the pajama, and the phone I had used to dial 911,” said Sougrakpam.  There was no time to get anything else, not even car keys or passports, he said. The Sougrakpams lived in Building 1 of the complex at 2120 Western Ave. There were six apartments in their building. Sougrakpam told The Enterprise that he is currently in a local hotel; his family — includin...

Developer starts making case for Third and Walnut apartment waivers | News

LANSDALE >> Plans for a six- story apartment building on the corner of Third and Walnut streets have been revised again, and Lansdale officials look likely to be asked to approve several waivers for the project. Developer Ross Ziegler and architect Mike Rosen presented the latest version of those plans Monday night , describing changes including a new fence next to a dog park meant to buffer the building from its next door neighbors on Third Street. “In terms of both the fence and the dog park, we’d be open to discussions, certainly, to explore what would be more desirable, or how we can come up with solutions that might make more sense,” said Rosen. “We really want to encourage the concept of pet ownership, and taking care of their pets. And we clearly have been sensitive to the neighbor issue, and we will deal with it,” he said. The proposed Third and Walnut apartment building — termed “Walnut Crossing” on the plans — has been discussed since late 2015 by various borough b...

As more apartments convert to Airbnb, St. Paul considers short-term rental rules

Matt Boys recently bought a dilapidated triplex near Charles and Snelling avenues in St. Paul with the goal of leasing out one apartment the traditional way and listing two others through the short- term rental platform Airbnb . Given the ongoing construction of a Major League Soccer stadium down the street, the Airbnb opportunity justified the $40,000 renovation, said Boys, noting he might not have taken the chance otherwise. Likewise, not all the apartments at the Lowry Building on downtown St. Paul’s Wabasha Street are available for lease year-round or even month-to-month. Building owner Madison Equities rents out at least seven units through Airbnb, and a handful of year-round tenants have taken to doing the same. As a result, visitors to downtown St. Paul can spend a night or two at the Lowry relaxing in a more residential setting than the typical hotel. But soon both properties may be out of step with the law in St. Paul. On Friday, the St. Paul Planning Commission voted 11...

Living On the Edge | Boise green lights housing at river's edge | News

The City of Boise has cleared the way for the proposed River Edge Apartments , an off- campus housing project for Boise State. The 350,000-square-foot, five-story project is designed for 622 residents on a 3.4-acre footprint at 1004 Royal Blvd. adjacent to the Greenbelt and Ann Morrison Park . But some neighbors aren't thrilled about the project. Eileen Barber is the owner of a three- story office building adjacent to the proposed site--a 25,000-square-foot building that houses Keynetics and its 100 employees. "The current design would harm not only the neighborhood, including Ann Morrison Park and the Boise River Greenbelt . It also may make the proposed project an undesirable place to live," said Barber. She called attention to the classification of the building as multi-family housing and, on April 17, asked Boise City Council members to reconsider the project, which at its highest point would be 28 feet taller than the current zoning allows. Project planner Becky...

Dumbo’s sugar crystal-inspired office building forms along the waterfront

It’s been nearly two years since we checked in with the ODA Architecture-designed project at 10 Jay Street in Dumbo, distinctive for its crystalized facade. That facade is now coming into shape at the construction site, photos by Brownstoner have revealed. Initially, developers Glacier Global Partners and Triangle Assets were planning to convert this 19th century red brick building into 46 condos with retail at the base, but in October 2015 the developers decided instead to convert the building into an office and retail space. The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission was impressed by the design team’s sugar crystal- inspired facade for the building, and approved the plans in March 2015. Built in 1897, the building served as a sugar refinery for several decades until it was converted into a warehouse in 1945. The building’s original red brick , river-fronting facade was replaced by concrete in later years, and in their plans, the developers now transforming the building asked ...

Athens School Board members prefer single campus for elementary buildings | Local News

The five members of the Athens City School Board appeared to discover at a meeting Thursday night that they all support a single-campus plan for elementary buildings in the district, though many details must be worked out regarding the number of buildings on a single campus and the type of grade-level configuration those buildings would have. The School Board did not vote on anything or make any decisions during its meeting at Athens High School , but simply held a discussion to figure out how each member stands on what would be best for the elementary buildings. Over the last 15 months, the Athens City School District has spent a significant portion of its meeting time engaging in dialogue with community members about the needs for students as they relate to aging school buildings . The district formed a Facilities Steering Committee to review the current makeup of district buildings, taking into consideration locations, grades served, and the needs of students. ...

City wins compromise adding retail to garage for Playhouse Square apartment tower (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Playhouse Square  agreed Thursday after some pressure from city planning officials to install a 20-foot- deep retail strip on the ground floor of a parking garage designed to serve a proposed 34- story apartment tower . The agreement capped a back-and-forth discussion at the meeting of the Downtown Flats Design Review Committee over schematic plans for the $ 135 million tower , on which Playhouse Square hopes to break ground late this year for the project. A revised ground floor plan for the Playhouse Square apartment tower garage shows how the theater district would reserve 1, 900 square feet on the Euclid Avenue side of the garage for retail. Solomon Cordwell Buenz   The tower would rise on the southwest corner of Euclid Avenue and East 17th Street . The committee -which advises the city's planning commission - approved the schematics. But the vote only came after the committee explored  whether Playhouse Square would do more than install a row of ...

Hotel residents paid up to $1,000 a month to face bedbugs, roaches

Image
For more than two years, city inspectors have documented unsafe and squalid conditions at a weekly hotel near uptown that houses low-income families with children, the disabled and others with nowhere else to go. Inspectors found rooms with no heat or air conditioning , piles of garbage, bedbugs and broken windows among other problems at the Airport Parkway Inn and Suites. Former tenants and a neighboring business complain the building on Wilkinson Boulevard is a magnet for drugs and crime. Now, Charlotte officials are taking steps that could lead to the demolition of the hotel, a rare move the city has not taken in at least seven years against a lodging establishment. The building is part of a virtually unnoticed housing sector in Charlotte, where hundreds of people suffering from addiction and mental illness or simply with few other options depend on weekly hotel rooms for permanent shelter. While tenants avoid sleeping on the streets, they often stay in decrepit and vermin-in...

Talen Energy to vacate PPL Plaza, move to Tower 6

Image
ALLENTOWN — Talen Energy will vacate The Plaza at PPL Center in downtown Allentown early next year and move its employees into cheaper office space just blocks away on Hamilton Street, saving the company millions but leaving its landmark headquarters building mired in foreclosure and facing an uncertain future. Talen spokesman Todd Martin , responding to a request by The Morning Call, said Tuesday that the energy company has made a “five-year commitment” to rent two floors of the soon-to-be-opened Tower 6 at Sixth and Hamilton streets. The move will take effect in the second quarter of 2018, coinciding with the end of Talen’s lease at PPL Plaza at 835 W. Hamilton St. “We’re pleased to be able to maintain our historic roots in downtown Allentown ,” Martin said. “We see this decision as beneficial to our business, our employees and the Greater Lehigh Valley , especially to others in the business community in downtown Allentown .” Tower 6, owned by City Center Investment Corp ., is in...
