New book iGen reveals the little-known ways smartphones are changing your kids

Image
by Jean M. Twenge Jean M. Twenge has been writing about generational differences for 25 years, producing bestsellers like Generation Me and The Narcissism Epidemic . In her latest book, Twenge zeroes in on iGen, the kids born in 1995 and later who have grown up with smartphones, had an Instagram page before they started high school and do not remember a time before the internet. The average teen checks her phone more than 80 times a day. The oldest iGen-ers, as she calls them, were early adolescents when the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and high school students when the iPad entered the market in 2010. Twenge argues the complete dominance of the smartphone among teens has had ripple effects across every area of iGen-er lives, from their social interactions to their mental health. Twenge draws on national surveys of 11 million Americans, conducted since 1960, to reach her conclusions. From about 2012, she started seeing "large, abrupt shifts in teens' behaviour and emoti...

Pet owners face challenges in finding affordable rentals

Bellingham is a college town, so Lindsay O’ Neal thought finding a place to live would be easy. However, four months after beginning her search, with her school start date looming , O’Neal is getting worried. The crux of her problem: she has pets. O’Neal, 35, has been looking for an apartment under $900 a month since April. She plans to study marine biology at Western Washington University in September, and like some students, she’s bringing her two cats with her to help with anxiety and stress. She’s now considering commuting 30 minutes to an hour each day from Blaine so she can still attend school in the fall. “I’ve never had this issue before. Usually I find a place and then get the place, but it’s been a nightmare. I don’t know what it is,” O’Neal said. “I can’t believe how difficult the whole thing has been. … People are looking for perfect tenants and that’s not realistic. You have to have a lot of money and no pets, it’s ridiculous.” O’Neal isn’t alone in feeling the pressure...

Yes, all those things are true. “But the real purpose behind me starting Pinnacle was to create a better life and a better circumstance for my family.” Her older sister, Jessica Narvaez, joined Pinnacle’s management team early on, followed by her younger brother, Freddy Vaca, then her husband, Jim Humrichouse, and cousin, Ximena Alvarez. Today, Vaca numbers her “family” in the thousands, including 5,000 employees and consultants and people in the communities here and abroad that she helps. “The larger and more successful we are at Pinnacle, the more we’re able to...

Construction to resume on NW 17th St. apartments - News - Gainesville Sun

The plan is to have at least half of the apartment building completed by August 2018 and the entire project completed by January 2019. By Daniel Smithson Staff writer The outer shell of what will be student housing and a retail destination in midtown remains with few workers trying to complete it. Coral Gables- based Roger Development Group executives halted construction at the site of what will be Midtown Apartments, located at 104 NW 17th St ., because of plans to make interior changes. Oscar Roger Jr ., vice president of the development group , said in construction when interior design changes occur, plumbing does as well. So while design changes were being ironed out, construction was slowed to avoid the costs of having people work in the meantime and potentially having to reroute plumbing again if more changes were made. But with those details now set, construction will resume within the next few weeks, Roger said. The plan is to have at least half of the apartment bu...

Rents Rose Fastest in Skinker DeBaliviere

Image
{Zillow} Great news? According to Zillow’s May 2017 Rental Market Overview , Skinker DeBaliviere has shown the largest increase of any St. Louis neighborhood in annual rents, a 12.9 percent gain. The only other neighborhoods where rents grew by more than 10 percent in the last year were Vandeventer (11.2 percent), and Tiffany (10.3). Notably, the increase in rents in our neighborhood was also higher than any town in the St. Louis Metro area , including towns in St. Charles County and Metro East in Illinois. People clearly want to live here, and we are on a roll. If you own rental properties in the neighborhood, this news might make you feel like breaking out the champagne. It also might give you some second thoughts about selling when you get those unsolicited letters from real estate operators asking to buy your home, as so many of us on my block seem to. If you own property in the neighborhood, then what’s not to like? {Zillow} Well, even if you like and will benefit from higher r...
