Heated Rematch in Central Brooklyn, Where Incumbent Seeks to Hold City Council Seat

Image
Council Member Laurie Cumbo (@cmlauriecumbo) Hundreds of Crown Heights residents and community activists laughed and jeered at a recent community forum as a lanky man wearing a paper mask of Mayor Bill de Blasio joked about bringing affordable housing to their neighborhood. The event was punctuated by moments of levity but mostly dominated by anger from residents who feel their elected representatives have sold out their interests to the real estate industry , with a focus on the proposed redevelopment of the vacant Bedford Union Armory . The de Blasio administration , with a developer, is proposing a combination of affordable and market rate rental apartments , condominium units, and recreation space for the massive site. City Council Member Laurie Cumbo , who represents the district, did not attend the August 2 forum focused on the project -- she was just days from giving birth to a son -- and when representatives of her office tried to speak, they were shouted down. The ev...

Athens School Board members prefer single campus for elementary buildings | Local News

The five members of the Athens City School Board appeared to discover at a meeting Thursday night that they all support a single-campus plan for elementary buildings in the district, though many details must be worked out regarding the number of buildings on a single campus and the type of grade-level configuration those buildings would have. The School Board did not vote on anything or make any decisions during its meeting at Athens High School , but simply held a discussion to figure out how each member stands on what would be best for the elementary buildings. Over the last 15 months, the Athens City School District has spent a significant portion of its meeting time engaging in dialogue with community members about the needs for students as they relate to aging school buildings . The district formed a Facilities Steering Committee to review the current makeup of district buildings, taking into consideration locations, grades served, and the needs of students. ...

Controversial South Asheville project looks to pivot

Concerns about traffic congestion are once again circling around a proposed development off Overlook Road in South Asheville . The developer, Paul Holst of Greensboro, previously pitched a 221-apartment, 30-townhome development called Overlook Apartments. That original plan encountered resistance from South Asheville residents concerned  about whether the existing road infrastructure could handle the increase in cars associated with a development of that size.  In June, Holst’s team asked the  Buncombe County Board of Adjustment to delay a hearing on the project before ultimately scrapping the plans. Holst is now looking to build a 98-home subdivision, named Overlook Point , on the same 25-acre footprint at 109 Overlook Road . N.C. Department of Transportation data show that in 2014, Overlook Road had an annual average daily traffic of 9,000 cars, or nearly 3.3 million cars a year. Information from Asheville Police Department ’s traffic incident report database shows Overlook Ro...

Is the San Fernando Valley’s future suburban?

Image
Known for strip malls and shopping centers and rows of single-family homes, the Valley is often thought of as somehow separate from Los Angeles—though most of its communities have been part of the city for over 100 years. But that perception may start to slip away as new transit options and LA’s rising cost of living draw in new residents and development dollars. In advance of some of these changes, we caught up with several active community members in the Valley to get their take on the region’s future. Here’s what we learned: Don’t call it a suburb The Valley may not be as dense as Downtown LA or Koreatown—nor as walkable—but it’s still plenty urban. “If the Valley is a suburb, I don’t know what you’d call Santa Clarita or Simi Valley or the Thousand Oaks area ,” says lifelong Valley resident Zachary Rynew , who founded the CiclaValley blog to promote bicycling events in the area and advocate for better bike infrastructure . Yvette Lopez-Ledesma, deputy director of Pacoima Beaut...
