As the housing crisis has grown across California, the state has seen a rise in the number of “super commuters,” residents who commute longer hours to cities starved of affordable housing, including those in the Bay Area. While the number of jobs brought into the Bay Area has grown in recent years, the availability of housing has not matched this increase, according to State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley. People working in service-type jobs are not being paid wages that would allow them to afford housing in the cities where they are employed, forcing many to make long commutes to and from work each day, Skinner said. “Those are essential services, but then they’re driven out to living further and further away just to be able to afford somewhere to live,” Skinner said. Census data from 2015 reported San Francisco , Alameda and Contra Costa counties’ average commute times to be 31.7 minutes, 30.7 minutes and 35.3 minutes respectively — an increase from 2010, when the commute times for...

BUSD discussed the possibility of providing rental housing units to school district employees Wednesday because of Berkeley’s growing housing crisis . The housing proposal falls under Senate Bill 1413, which allows school districts to provide affordable housing to employees in need. The standard cost for the housing is based on the median income in Alameda County, which is less than $100,000 for a four-person household. Executive Director of Facilities Timothy White led the meeting’s discussion about housing and said the goal is to house about 1, 250 district employees . “We are not the only school district that has expressed this interest: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Clara, San Mateo County and even Oakland Unified have all looked into teacher housing,” White said. “There is a healthy debate about the need of employee housing.” White said the proposed sites for the housing units are 1224 University Ave . , 1720 Oregon St., the Berkeley Adult School parking lot and the ...

Article Tools Christopher Sellers had one pair of pants, a stack of court papers and $12.50 when they dropped him off at the bus station in Scranton at 6:30 a.m. The 54-year-old completed his prison sentence at SCI Waymart with one parting instruction — get to the halfway house — and little more. It costs $800 to get out of jail, said William McCarthy, chief probation officer of the county Adult Probation and Parole Department — not in fees from the justice system, but for a deposit on an apartment and first month’s rent. Those who don’t have the money stay locked up longer because stable housing is a condition of parole. Left on their own to start over, many who get out revert to their old ways because they don’t have the support they need, he said Sunday, while walking through the small and first-ever 2nd Chance Festival in Nay Aug Park, an event organized by the Lackawanna County Reentry Task Force ’s housing subcommittee. The task force, a con...

The latest phase of Staley Hills is now open featuring a new community entrance off of N. Woodland Avenue and 63 spacious homesites, many of which back to trees or greenspace. “This has been a highly anticipated new phase in the community,” explains Sara Stucker , community manager and ReeceNichols real estate agent . “Treed homesites are always very popular and this phase offers plenty for home buyers to choose from. We’ve taken a number of reservations already and expect that these lots will not be available for long.” A red- hot housing market and new home construction in Staley Hills have kept Stucker, her partner, Deb DiPonio, and the homebuilders they work with busy this spring and summer. “Our buyers are finding that their current homes are selling within hours of coming on the market, often times with multiple offers over the list price,” said Stucker. “This fast- paced housing market has driven up the demand for new homes and our builders have been pushing to keep availabl...
