Firefighters adopt puppy after saving him from burning apartment

One lucky puppy who was rescued from a burning apartment is now being adopted by the very firefighters who saved his life. When the firefighters of the City of Newburgh Fire Department in New York were called to the second floor of a three- story apartment building in downtown Newburgh on August 3, they were told by residents that two puppies were left behind, Lt. Timothy Dexter told ABC News . "We kept it from spreading," he said, referring to the blaze, "but two puppies were missing. I went in to search for the puppies and checked the whole front rooms." Dexter, who's been with the department for 10 years, said another firefighter Chris Baum found the first puppy in a back room. "He handed it to me. I ran it out and we tried giving it CPR. It did not survive," he added. After returning to the fire-stricken apartment to search for the second pit bull, the crew decided to go into the room where the fire originated. 'Unspeakable Violence': Heroin Kingpin With Michigan Ave. Apartment Who Murdered Lifelong Friend Gets 37 Years

Greg Holden's two young daughters were home when his "lifelong friend" broke into the family's Woodridge apartment and shot him approximately 20 times, the U.S. Attorney's office says. David Price killed Holden in December 2011, prosecutors say, because Holden had become a federal informant and was cooperating with authorities to take down a collosal heroin operation that funded Price's "lavish lifestyle." Price, a 38-year-old from Brookfield, was sentenced to 37 years in prison Friday by a federal judge for supplying large amounts of heroin to the West Side of Chicago and murdering Holden , the U.S. Attorney’s office announced. Price was convicted on all 13 counts against him, including heroin conspiracy , money laundering and having an “Uzi-style” semi-auto pistol with an extended magazine. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Harry D. Leinenweber in Chicago. Prosecutors said Price ran a violent drug ring that moved 90 kilograms of heroin t...

Prosecutors say heroin kingpin protected his drug empire with ruthless violence. He faces up to life in prison

Image
Federal prosecutors say David Price's body tells the story of his life — from the tattoo covering his face that says "Neighborhood Bully" to the pictures of his children tattooed on his back just above the tat showing him with guns blazing in each hand, by the words "God Forgives, I Don't." He lived by those words, prosecutors allege, shooting a longtime friend in front of the man's 3-year-old daughter for cooperating with the feds, ordering hits on other "rats" and even threatening to kill his own father when he refused to continue to launder drug money . Price, nicknamed "Shorty" and "Hot Sauce," acted ruthlessly to protect a lucrative drug empire that supplied heroin to open- air drug markets on Chicago's West Side for seven years, prosecutors said. The profits enabled Price to live lavishly, buying luxury homes , including a downtown high-rise apartment; driving a Corvette and a custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle...

‘Apartment 1303’ Review: Mischa Barton Fans, Rejoice!

“Apartments don’t kill people. People kill people .” If only there were more howlers of that caliber in “Apartment 1303,” this truly vacant thriller might have clawed its way into so-bad-it’s-good territory. As it is, your monthly rent is probably scarier than what writer- director Michael Taverna has cooked up in this inept and derivative tale of a Detroit flat that mysteriously drives its tenants to suicide. With “The Conjuring” still in theaters and “The Tenant,” “The Shining,” “The 4th Floor,” “1408” and countless other real-estate chillers still in circulation, only the least discriminating genre aficionados and Mischa Barton fans need bother checking out this VOD time-waster in theaters; it’s being released in a stereoscopic version called “Apartment 1303 3D,” adding a clunker of a title to the pic’s list of reasons not to exist. This story first appeared in the July 30, 2013 issue of Variety. Taverna’s film is a Detroit-set remake of a 2007 Japanese horror-thriller with the s...
