Massive apartment project to change face of downtown Boca

Mizner 200 will be one of the largest construction projects in Boca Raton's downtown, offering three nine- story apartment buildings across 9 acres. There will be 384 new apartments and garages with 672 parking spaces. You’ll also see an overhauled stretch of Southeast Mizner Boulevard — inundated with new canopy trees, park space and benches along an 8-foot-wide, paver-laden sidewalk. It’s too early to say when construction will begin. But Mizner 200, at 200 SE Mizner Blvd ., will give the area a much-needed face-lift, some residents say. It’s the latest high- rise project coming to downtown Boca, among the fastest rising in Palm Beach County . “It’s an amazing project and one that I think Boca can stand behind in a very proud fashion,” said Marisela Catilla, a resident of Royal Palm Place just across the street. The city, which this week approved the project, said it’s a product of cooperation between Mizner 200’s developer, Coral Springs-based El- ad National Properties , a...

Downtown apartment project still in limbo

Image
MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - An announcement was made five years ago about a big housing project for downtown Meridian. According to the mayor and other business leaders, that project and others are getting closer to becoming a reality. Oxford- based Chartre Companies first announced plans to convert the old BellSouth building on 23rd Avenue into Cumberland Terrace Apartments in 2012. Just last year the city's community development director , Bunky Partridge, shared with Newscenter 11 the company's plan to put a coffee shop, gym and apartment balconies for the complex. A year later, the building still looks the same from the outside. But Mayor Percy Bland says he expects that to change. "They are telling us that they are ready to move forward. We're just waiting on them," said Bland. In a statement to Newscenter 11, the administrative director for Mississippi State University 's Meridian campus says that the additional housing downtown ...

Scuttlebiz: Mom-and-pop closes while chains remain the same

Funny how your tastes change. There once was a time – back when Coolio actually was cool – when I desperately wanted to live in a town with an Applebee’s . I now reside in a metro area with five, and I’m more concerned that a hole-in-the-wall joint like Silla Cafe is closing. The Broad Street eatery , whose teriyaki chicken has been beloved by downtown denizens for more than two decades, is calling it quits next month. Owned and operated by Felton and Tae Mitchell , the literal “mom-and-pop” restaurant serves its last dish at 855 Broad St. on Sept. 14. “We had fun, but we’re ready to retire now,” Tae said. “We’ve been talking about retiring for a couple years now.” She said that decision to retire was hastened, however, by a steep increase in their rent. “It’s almost double,” she said in a phone interview. Last year the building was purchased by Rafik “Rafi” Bassali , a young real estate investor who is becoming somewhat of a downtown property mogul . The owner of The Swank Company...

Mike Gothberg and his business partners already have plans for the Arcadia building . (Photo: Noe Hernandez/The Enquirer) After Arcadia Brewing Co. closes its West Michigan Avenue location in September, the building will be turned into a space for new restaurants, a pub and apartments, a developer said Monday. Mike Gothberg, co-owner of the 34,000-square-foot building that houses Arcadia , said he expects to fill the two-story building with up to four restaurants or pubs, or even another brewery, on the first floor by next spring and at least 20 loft-style apartments on the second floor in the near future. "We have a plan for the whole building, ultimately," Gothberg said. "I'm excited to see what we can get done in there now. "I feel that, with the agent we have and their connections, we should be able to put someone in there by early spring," he added. Fairfield Co loses jobs, a dream of changing its fortunes | News

JENKINSVILLE (AP) — For the better part of a decade, thousands of people showed up in this town on the shores of Lake Monticello and got to work on a project that was sure to change its fortunes. As a pair of nuclear reactors rose behind the gates of the V.C. Summer power plant , a town of fewer than 100 residents suddenly had a few thousand. Campsites and restaurants sprang up before long to meet the new need, banking on a few more years of construction work and decades of maintenance to come. The boom in this rural corner of Fairfield County coincided with rising hopes in Winnsboro, the county seat, which is 25 minutes east on winding backroads. South Carolina Electric & Gas was spending billions of dollars to build two of America's first new nuclear reactors since the 1980s, and county officials expected a property tax windfall — tens of millions of dollars every year for decades. They imagined new fortunes for one of the state's smallest counties, a place with a sh...

Rents Rose Fastest in Skinker DeBaliviere

Image
{Zillow} Great news? According to Zillow’s May 2017 Rental Market Overview , Skinker DeBaliviere has shown the largest increase of any St. Louis neighborhood in annual rents, a 12.9 percent gain. The only other neighborhoods where rents grew by more than 10 percent in the last year were Vandeventer (11.2 percent), and Tiffany (10.3). Notably, the increase in rents in our neighborhood was also higher than any town in the St. Louis Metro area , including towns in St. Charles County and Metro East in Illinois. People clearly want to live here, and we are on a roll. If you own rental properties in the neighborhood, this news might make you feel like breaking out the champagne. It also might give you some second thoughts about selling when you get those unsolicited letters from real estate operators asking to buy your home, as so many of us on my block seem to. If you own property in the neighborhood, then what’s not to like? {Zillow} Well, even if you like and will benefit from higher r...

After 62 Years and Many Battles, Village Voice Will End Print Publication

Writers feuded with each other in the paper’s letters column and in the offices. Readers were as opinionated as the writers. Marginal tastes in the arts or ideology flourished, often in language that readers armed only with graduate degrees could understand. No pun was too convoluted, no cross-cultural reference too obscure. One measure of the paper’s contrarian vitality was the certitude with which diehard readers of any era could say exactly when its quality went downhill. For Voice devotees, the golden age was always the one just past. But the printed paper was also an artifact of a downtown world that no longer exists. The Village Voice was founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher and Norman Mailer, and for decades it sold a weekly version thick with classified ads. Its mix of political and cultural coverage created a model for alternative weeklies around the country, many of which have since folded. In 1996, facing competition from publications like Time Out New York and The New ...

Atlanta-based full- service multifamily investor Cocke Finkelstein made its first acquisition in Grand Rapids with the purchase of Ramblewood Apartments. At 1,710-units, the new owners will certainly be busy with upgrades, as Cocke Finkelstein plans to make significant capital investments into the property. CFLane, the management subsidiary of Cocke Finkelstein , will handle daily operations at the community, which was 98 percent occupied at the time of sale. Why Grand Rapids? Well the city sees significant job growth , low unemployment, and average apartment occupancy of 98 percent and limited new construction, according to the new owner. Ramblewood was built in phases from 1972 and 1985. There are two campuses that stretch across 188 acres. Comfort and convenience abound at Forest Park Apartments

April 16, 2010 | By LUCY CLARK It's easy to miss the entrance to the Forest Park Apartments in Farmington. That's because carefully landscaped arborvitae , maple trees, rhododendrons and other greenery screen the suburban enclave from the road. The development, with 58 two-bedroom townhouse and ranch- style apartments built around two manmade ponds with large fountains, offers stunning views . All of the 1,200-square- foot carpeted apartments have private decks, new maple kitchens and 1.5 bathrooms. Units are equipped with washer-dryer hookups and have central air conditioning . Thermal windows increase energy -efficiency. "It's very private; there is a very secure feeling. A lot of people are looking for that today," says Jean Munson, manager of the complex, where she has lived for 15 years. "It's very home-like." Her apartment doubles as the office for the apartments. Munson - affectionately known as the "mayor" of the Forest Park A...
