Detroit's tiny homes offer a big chance for struggling residents

Image
This is Detroit, not Hobbiton. Just like the tiny homes of the hobbits in the "Lord of The Rings" series, the Cass Community Center Tiny Homes Project looks cute. But its small buildings house big hopes . Four years ago, Detroit became the biggest American city in history to file for bankruptcy, brought down by a snowballing financial crisis that followed huge layoffs at the city's major employers General Motors ( GM ) and Chrysler. Today, Detroit is in a period of economic recovery, yet many of its hardest hit residents still don't have adequate housing . The homeless population is around 2,000 and dwindling, according to city authorities. But uncertainty hangs over low-income earners, who struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living. "Purchase prices and rents are increasing faster than people's incomes," says Earl Poleski, executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority . "That's a manifestation o...

New food pantry is welcome at Vera French | Local News

A new food pantry has opened in Davenport, and it represents nearly the 200th for those who partner with  River Bend Foodbank . This pantry will be open twice each month and is intended for tenants of Vera French Housing , Davenport. It is located in an apartment complex at 215 E. 37th St. Stacy Kiser-Willey, executive director of Vera French Housing , got the idea for the food pantry after hearing a talk by Mike Miller, River Bend's executive director. The Vera French apartments have about 137 residents and families. Many are on limited incomes, with money becoming short by the end of each month, Kiser-Willey said. Before the pantry opened on Wednesday, the tenants were directed to another pantry location or helped out to an extent from the apartment complex office . "In the past three years, we have really seen people run short at the end of each month," Kiser-Willey said. The pantry is operating on a budget, which needs donations, and volunteers including from the f...

Industry applauds new sustainable public housing at Ivanhoe, but is the model sustainable?

Image
Frasers Property Australia , Citta Property Group and Mission Australia have won the tender for the $2. 2 billion redevelopment of the Ivanhoe public housing estate in Macquarie Park, in north-east Sydney. The project is set to achieve high sustainability outcomes , such as carbon neutral operation , but while the news has been welcomed by many in the property industry , it has also raised questions about just how replicable this model of public housing funding is. The master plan for the 8.2 hectare site will see 259 existing low - density public housing dwellings demolished and replaced with more than 3000 dwellings built by the Aspire consortium, including at least 950 new social housing apartments and 128 affordable rental apartments . A non-government co- educational vertical high school , two 75- place childcare centres , a 120- bed aged care facility , 141 social housing independent living units and 132 private independent living units are also in the plans. Committee recommends $120,000 for downtown rental rehab program

Posted: Aug. 24, 2017 9:15 am QUINCY -- A Quincy committee recommends that $120,000 be provided for the redevelopment of five apartments in four downtown buildings. The $120,000 investment through the city's tax increment financing rental rehab program would include private investment of more than $154,000. Chuck Bevelheimer, director of planning and development, told the TIF Rental Rehab Committee on Wednesday night that he believed the program was making a difference downtown. "When you get into renovation projects, you're always getting into something that is unknown," Bevelheimer said. "Without this program, I don't think you would be seeing the investment right now." In the first two years of the TIF rental rehab program , the city has provided $210,000 and has seen $335,800 in private investment in 10 upper- story apartments downtown . "If we're going to make market- rate housing downtown , this level of investment is necessary, and I ...

‘Apartment 1303’ Review: Mischa Barton Fans, Rejoice!

“Apartments don’t kill people. People kill people .” If only there were more howlers of that caliber in “Apartment 1303,” this truly vacant thriller might have clawed its way into so-bad-it’s-good territory. As it is, your monthly rent is probably scarier than what writer- director Michael Taverna has cooked up in this inept and derivative tale of a Detroit flat that mysteriously drives its tenants to suicide. With “The Conjuring” still in theaters and “The Tenant,” “The Shining,” “The 4th Floor,” “1408” and countless other real-estate chillers still in circulation, only the least discriminating genre aficionados and Mischa Barton fans need bother checking out this VOD time-waster in theaters; it’s being released in a stereoscopic version called “Apartment 1303 3D,” adding a clunker of a title to the pic’s list of reasons not to exist. This story first appeared in the July 30, 2013 issue of Variety. Taverna’s film is a Detroit-set remake of a 2007 Japanese horror-thriller with the s...

Is New Orleans worth it? | News | Gambit Weekly

Image
At the end of one sticky month during the summer of 2017, Elizabeth Bolles will have finished packing the contents of her Riverbend apartment. She, her partner, their two young sons and two dogs will then pile into her Subaru and drive 350 miles to Houston, where her partner will start a new job.   The move is the upshot of six years of frustration and disappointment for Bolles since she graduated from Tulane University's law school in 2011. Since then, she's struggled to find a well-paying job in New Orleans; she's been runner-up for several positions and has worked odd jobs and short-term gigs to make ends meet . She's in the same boat as many of her friends and acquaintances in the city — a one- time National Merit Scholar who's been waiting tables for a decade, a buddy with two doctorates who can't find a professional job .   "You hear one person's story," Bolles says, "and you think maybe there's something going on with them, maybe...
