by Jean M. Twenge Jean M. Twenge has been writing about generational differences for 25 years, producing bestsellers like Generation Me and The Narcissism Epidemic . In her latest book, Twenge zeroes in on iGen, the kids born in 1995 and later who have grown up with smartphones, had an Instagram page before they started high school and do not remember a time before the internet. The average teen checks her phone more than 80 times a day. The oldest iGen-ers, as she calls them, were early adolescents when the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and high school students when the iPad entered the market in 2010. Twenge argues the complete dominance of the smartphone among teens has had ripple effects across every area of iGen-er lives, from their social interactions to their mental health. Twenge draws on national surveys of 11 million Americans, conducted since 1960, to reach her conclusions. From about 2012, she started seeing "large, abrupt shifts in teens' behaviour and emoti...

Editor's Note — For complete coverage of the Eclipse of the Century go to cnn.com/eclipse. Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) — Three minutes before darkness fell in the middle of a hot South Carolina afternoon , Angela Picot and her sisters noticed that the crickets had started chirping. At 2:40 p.m. ET, one minute before the sun was completely blocked by the moon, the streetlights at the South Carolina State Capitol complex turned on. Those gathered started cheering as the city of Columbia plunged into complete darkness and the sun's corona became visible to the naked eye. "That was worth the entire trip," Picot said. "It was totally worth it." When Picot saw the path of the 2017 solar eclipse on NASA's website last October, she knew she was heading to South Carolina . A high school engineering teacher in Smithfield, Virginia, Picot drove six hours on Friday, August 18, to her sister's place in Columbia, bringing her 14-year-old daughter Kylie Saw...

Cinderella Apartments - The Washington Post

Take a ride on the 8M Metrobus line called Shirley -Duke.But don't expect to find any traces of the old Shirley-Duke -- the notorious, decaying crime- ridden apartment complex that was closed in the late '70s. This is now Foxchase of Alexandria. And, as the trendy Foxchase ads have promised for the past year, it offers "2,113 new leases on living." "That bus is one of the last things left with the Shirley-Duke name," said Leonard Skolnik, property manager of Foxchase, a development that could house 5,000 people, or 5 percent of Alexandria's population. "And I don't think there is anything we can do about that. Though we'd like to . . . ." It has been a year since the first tenants moved into the 87-acre property -- formerly the 200 buildings of the Shirley-Duke and Regina apartments -- between Duke Street and Shirley Highway in the west end of Alexandria. After renovating the interiors of all the buildings, adding balconies to al...
