New book iGen reveals the little-known ways smartphones are changing your kids

In her latest book, Twenge zeroes in on iGen, the kids born in 1995 and later who have grown up with smartphones, had an Instagram page before they started high school and do not remember a time before the internet. The average teen checks her phone more than 80 times a day. The oldest iGen-ers, as she calls them, were early adolescents when the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and high school students when the iPad entered the market in 2010. Twenge argues the complete dominance of the smartphone among teens has had ripple effects across every area of iGen-er lives, from their social interactions to their mental health. Update: West Nile Virus SOUTH WINDSOR — The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station announced that mosquitoes trapped in 12 towns have tested positive for West Nile virus so far this season. The towns include: Branford, Glastonbury, Greenwich, North Branford, North Stonington, Orange, Plainfield, South Windsor, Stamford, Stratford, West Haven, and Westport. To reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes residents should: Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active; be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair; wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are more active; clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin; use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies when outdoors; consider the use of mosquito repellent , accord...

Industry applauds new sustainable public housing at Ivanhoe, but is the model sustainable?

Frasers Property Australia , Citta Property Group and Mission Australia have won the tender for the $2. 2 billion redevelopment of the Ivanhoe public housing estate in Macquarie Park, in north-east Sydney. The project is set to achieve high sustainability outcomes , such as carbon neutral operation , but while the news has been welcomed by many in the property industry , it has also raised questions about just how replicable this model of public housing funding is. The master plan for the 8.2 hectare site will see 259 existing low - density public housing dwellings demolished and replaced with more than 3000 dwellings built by the Aspire consortium, including at least 950 new social housing apartments and 128 affordable rental apartments .
