Massachusetts' economic boom puts pressure on housing costs

Image
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts’ booming economy is bringing with it a downside for those looking to rent an apartment or buy a home in the state: soaring housing costs , particularly in the greater Boston area . The problem isn’t new, but it’s more acute in places where the economy has taken off, spurred by a surge in the life sciences sector and the arrival of top companies like General Electric to the state. That upward pressure is one reason why Beacon Hill leaders are continuing to look for ways to create new affordable housing units while preserving existing units . Gov. Charlie Baker this week announced $72 million in housing subsidy funds and additional state and federal tax credits to 25 projects across the state. The goal is to help create, refurbish and preserve 1, 970 housing units , including units reserved for low- income families and families making their way out of homelessness. Wire rope was spun here. Now Trenton factory gets new life as lofts

TRENTON -- The year was 1917 and the Roebling complex's Clark Street Rope Shop in Trenton reopened after being gutted by a fire two years earlier. The new building was ultramodern for its day, with steel trusses, fire-resistant materials and massive windows that flooded the space with natural daylight. It's here where the wire used in Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis plane was believed to be manufactured. Now, a century later, the building has been reinvented as the Roebling Lofts with 16-to-24-foot ceilings, 10-foot windows and environmentally friendly features . The latest project by Trenton- based HHG Development , it aims to combine the old with the new. "It was always obvious to us that this was the best development site in Trenton," Michael Goldstein, one of the principals, said during a recent building tour . "We've always had our eyes on it." But it wasn't until January 2011 that the county approved a development agreement with HH...

Fire at Quail Ridge Apartments highlights building violations

Image
MAUMEE, OH (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - Twelve residents of a Maumee apartment complex have to search for a new place to live after the building caught on fire around 6:00 p.m. Saturday night. The Maumee Fire Chief says the fire started in some mulch at the Quail Ridge apartments located on Piccadilly Lane near Dussel Drive and then spread. The building housed eight units. Resident Debbie Binkley says she saw the fire in a bush, and it spread very quickly from there. Everyone was able to make it out of the building safely . Insurance claims agents met with residents on Monday to assess the damage, but residents say they feel the building's owner, Mark Merrill, should have to help pay for what they have lost, and brought up several building violations that have been reported. The Piccadilly Lane Limited Partnership was in court for violations from February 2012. Court documents show the company has failed to maintain the property, saying balconies were not structurally sound, elec...
