Where Millennials Live Alone—and Where They're With Mom and Dad

The kids are not all right—or so the click-bait headlines would lead you to believe. There are countless stories about those flighty millennials who job-hop every year, are crazy-obsessed with their iPhone phablets and shell out too much on  Instagrammable avocado toast or kale smoothies to move out of their parents’ basements and ( gasp !) pay their own rent. There's more than a hint of truth to that last part. About 15% of 25- to 35-year-olds were still crashing with their folks in 2016, according to a  Pew Research study . And that leaves 85% either cramming into apartments with friends or living solo. The young-at- heart data team at realtor.com® decided to dig into these numbers. As it turns out, where millennials are living plays a big role in whether they   are   most likely to live alone, as opposed to with their folks. And there's a lot of variation across the country, we learned. Related Articles "We definitely see a larger percentage of millennials living at...

Inside the Cultural Revival of Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Image
fastest growing city ." src="src" /> Downtown revival: Eau Claire is now Wisconsin's second- fastest growing city . Andrea Paulseth /Volume One The small Wisconsin city is enjoying a cultural revival, thanks to its gorgeous setting, a few well-placed boosters, and a knack for smart development . Justin Green lived in Austin, Texas, most of his life. He opened a music studio there, got married, and had two kids. But by 2016, the 31-year-old felt it was time to leave behind the heat, crowds, and costs of the state’s fast-growing capital. He thought about Madison, Wisconsin, with its strong music scene . But bands kept telling Green to look further north, to Eau Claire. The town is known to indie music fans as the home of the Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival, a two-day event co-founded and curated by singer- songwriter Justin Vernon of the band Bon Iver, who grew up there. So Green and his wife paid a visit. “We were just like, ‘Holy shit! This plac...

At least 10 South Carolina bands drop albums in August, but what do double digits really mean for the music scene? | Charleston Scene

Image
Whether it was the summer heat or a carefully planned series of debuts, at least 10 South Carolina bands have released or are releasing EPs or full-length albums this August. What would seem like an impressive feat is seemingly becoming the norm. The question is whether there are significantly more bands cropping up in the South Carolina music scene , or has it just become much easier to self-release music in the digital age? With easy access to online listening platforms escalating , the question also arises whether the local scene is becoming diluted with more music but not necessarily noteworthy music .  "I feel like the digital age has taken away from the significance of releasing a record," says Andrew Oliver of Greenville psychedelic band Brother Oliver . "The ability for musicians to record so easily from home studios has given a lot of freedom to create bountifully, but it creates a unique filter-less scenario for the consumer. However, it does just reinforce ...

10 differences between Silver Lake and West Hollywood that are sure to start arguments

Image
Fake Tans vs Man Buns In West Hollywood , the coffee shops, cafes, and gyms are overflowing with beautiful people, one more gorgeous than the next. These people, with their technician- administered airbrush tans and perfectly white teeth , can’t shut up about the movie business. At first glance, it may seem that the Silver Lakers are much less image-obsessed, but that perfectly curled mustache took hours to perfect. Why does every man in Silverlake have facial hair and a man bun? Intelligentsia vs Starbucks You’ll find many a Silver Lake resident hanging out at Intelligentsia – home of the coffee snob. You want lots of cream or sugar in your coffee? Brace yourself for heaps of condescension. All coffee should be single brew, don’t you know? There’s only one Starbucks located in Silver Lake proper , whereas there are countless Starbucks peppered throughout WeHo. West Hollywood residents use coffee as fuel for their auditions and/or business deals and simply don’t have all day to si...

Rents Rose Fastest in Skinker DeBaliviere

Image
{Zillow} Great news? According to Zillow’s May 2017 Rental Market Overview , Skinker DeBaliviere has shown the largest increase of any St. Louis neighborhood in annual rents, a 12.9 percent gain. The only other neighborhoods where rents grew by more than 10 percent in the last year were Vandeventer (11.2 percent), and Tiffany (10.3). Notably, the increase in rents in our neighborhood was also higher than any town in the St. Louis Metro area , including towns in St. Charles County and Metro East in Illinois. People clearly want to live here, and we are on a roll. If you own rental properties in the neighborhood, this news might make you feel like breaking out the champagne. It also might give you some second thoughts about selling when you get those unsolicited letters from real estate operators asking to buy your home, as so many of us on my block seem to. If you own property in the neighborhood, then what’s not to like? {Zillow} Well, even if you like and will benefit from higher r...
