Cramped Apartment? Try Ori's Transforming, Robotic Furniture

A universally acknowledged truth about living in New York City is that there's very little space to go around. What passes for an entire apartment in Manhattan is considered a walk-in closet in Des Moines. This dearth of square footage has resulted in a couple notable phenomenons : Namely, pocket-emptying rents and some—let's just call it—creative uses of space. I recently glimpsed one particularly unusual vision of our inevitable micro-living future. Twenty floors up in a luxury midtown Manhattan studio apartment , a hulking piece of furniture sat pressed against the wall. From the front it looked like an entertainment console with built in shelving. From the side, it appeared to be a regular bookshelf, save for a small button. At nine feet tall, five feet wide and seven feet long, the thing took up nearly a fourth of the apartment's main living area , leaving just enough space for what could either be a livingroom or bedroom, but definitely not both. "This is Ori,...

Small Apartment Got A Complete Remodel And A New Attic Room

Image
Sometimes an apartment can seem smaller than it actually is and that’s usually because of bad planning of the floor space or an impractical layout . This 48. 5 square meter apartment in New Taipei City, Taiwan is a pretty good example. Its original interior design was fragmented, with lots of walls separating the spaces, creating a claustrophobic ambiance. Then came A’Lentil Design and gave the apartment a complete remodel. View in gallery Initially, the apartment had a layout that made it feel smaller than it actually was View in gallery This used to be a second bedroom and it’s been transformed into the new living room The first thing the designers did was to break down the original layout and to open up the interior. They wanted to offer the inhabitants more freedom of movement and it was hard to achieve that with all the walls standing in the way. By eliminating the unnecessary barriers , they also managed to ensure a better connection between the different spaces in the apart...

Step inside this cheerful seaside apartment, full of colour and coastal detail

Image
When the owners bought this Victorian seaside apartment in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, it was dated, run down and needed a lot of work. ‘Most people wouldn’t have bothered to give this dated seaside flat a second chance,’ says the owner. ‘However we could see beyond its dilapidated interior.’ ‘We’ ve renovated properties before, so we knew it could look great, but we had to really visualise how it could be.’ The flat was uninhabitable initially, so the owners spent their weekends renovating and altering the property until it was barely recognisable as the flat that they’d originally bought. They took inspiration from the coastal setting, introducing natural materials , pastel colours and treasures found on the beach. Living room Seaside apartment " width="1000" height="1000" /> The front bay window in the living room was the only thing in the flat that was kept exactly as it was originally found, as it had recently been replaced. A collection of mismatched...

ICYMI: Al Capone’s Park Slope Home Is For Sale

Image
PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — If you've ever wanted to live in the old Brooklyn home of a notorious gangster, you've got a chance to do it. The Park Slope home where Al Capone used to live is up for sale, and it will only cost you a cool $2.5 million to move in. Capone grew up in a nearby building on Garfield Place, according to realtor.com, and moved into this listing in the early 1900s. "If he had lived here today, he wouldn’t have to go into the rum-running business," listing agent Bren Salamon told Patch . That's because Capone could make some serious dough from the two rental units attached to the condo, which could bring in a pretty penny in 2017 Park Slope . Anyone who moves in, though, won't be looking at any old relics of Brooklyn gone by. The home, as many are in the borough these days, was completely renovated by an investor about a year ago. The main townhouse is 2, 980 square feet spread over two levels. Along with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, t...

House Tour: Vintage '60s Fabric Attic Apartment

Name: Terra Zosel Location: Kenwood Neighborhood, Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Rented 6 months The story of Terra's apartment is multi-fold. Her home occupies the attic of her grandparents' house where she lives as caretaker to her grandmother. Her grandparents purchased the home in the 1960s from a couple who relocated from Minneapolis to the significantly warmer state of Florida. Little information is known about those earlier owners or what the "genie bottle" room was used for, but Terra does know that it remained largely untouched from how the former resident — an artist — left it. As a child, Terra and her cousins often visited their grandparent's attic — it was the play room, the place for children to escape to, explore and stay out of the way of the adults in the rest of the house. Years later, various grandchildr...

Studio Into Cozy

Image
One would hardly realize this tiny studio space isn ’t truly a one bedroom. In this aptly decorated studio , room dividers which have a clear/see-through glass finish, allow you to see from the living room/bedroom area, directly into the bathroom space. With fully functional cabinets in the kitchen, which have a design style of industrialized steel, the apartment has the feel of an old-factory setting, with a distinct modern look and vibe.  With the see-through dividers, not only does natural light flow from one space to the other, but it truly opens up the tiny space, and gives it a much larger appearance and feel. Simple decorative pieces , such as metal towel hangers in the bathroom space, and a wicker laundry basket , afford the home with the modern look and feel, without looking too modern or new for the space. Accent pieces such as the large, green tree in the corner, also help open up the space, especially as the natural light shines through with the room divider partit...
