Developer starts making case for Third and Walnut apartment waivers | News

LANSDALE >> Plans for a six- story apartment building on the corner of Third and Walnut streets have been revised again, and Lansdale officials look likely to be asked to approve several waivers for the project. Developer Ross Ziegler and architect Mike Rosen presented the latest version of those plans Monday night , describing changes including a new fence next to a dog park meant to buffer the building from its next door neighbors on Third Street. “In terms of both the fence and the dog park, we’d be open to discussions, certainly, to explore what would be more desirable, or how we can come up with solutions that might make more sense,” said Rosen. “We really want to encourage the concept of pet ownership, and taking care of their pets. And we clearly have been sensitive to the neighbor issue, and we will deal with it,” he said. The proposed Third and Walnut apartment building — termed “Walnut Crossing” on the plans — has been discussed since late 2015 by various borough b...

New homesites backing to trees now available in Staley Hills

The latest phase of Staley Hills is now open featuring a new community entrance off of N. Woodland Avenue and 63 spacious homesites, many of which back to trees or greenspace. “This has been a highly anticipated new phase in the community,” explains Sara Stucker , community manager and ReeceNichols real estate agent . “Treed homesites are always very popular and this phase offers plenty for home buyers to choose from. We’ve taken a number of reservations already and expect that these lots will not be available for long.” A red- hot housing market and new home construction in Staley Hills have kept Stucker, her partner, Deb DiPonio, and the homebuilders they work with busy this spring and summer. “Our buyers are finding that their current homes are selling within hours of coming on the market, often times with multiple offers over the list price,” said Stucker. “This fast- paced housing market has driven up the demand for new homes and our builders have been pushing to keep availabl...

Wire rope was spun here. Now Trenton factory gets new life as lofts

TRENTON -- The year was 1917 and the Roebling complex's Clark Street Rope Shop in Trenton reopened after being gutted by a fire two years earlier. The new building was ultramodern for its day, with steel trusses, fire-resistant materials and massive windows that flooded the space with natural daylight. It's here where the wire used in Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis plane was believed to be manufactured. Now, a century later, the building has been reinvented as the Roebling Lofts with 16-to-24-foot ceilings, 10-foot windows and environmentally friendly features . The latest project by Trenton- based HHG Development , it aims to combine the old with the new. "It was always obvious to us that this was the best development site in Trenton," Michael Goldstein, one of the principals, said during a recent building tour . "We've always had our eyes on it." But it wasn't until January 2011 that the county approved a development agreement with HH...

Affordable housing development Ivanhoe Estate in Sydney gets government go-ahead

Image
The massive new social and affordable housing renewal development just given the go-ahead by the NSW Government in Sydney’s north has been greeted with cautious approval by experts. But while it’s been hailed as “ground-breaking” by some, with plans for similar scale projects at four other major sites, others have said it still is a long way off solving housing affordability for many Sydneysiders. “Of course, the provision of this new affordable housing is always good, but it’s still just a drop in the ocean,” says Associate Professor Eileen Webb , of the Curtin Law School , who’s been studying the lack of housing. We’ve also had reports that a further one in 10 Australian households are in housing stress and at risk of homelessness, which is 850,000...

Part 5: Making room for our home’s hiding places

Image
As we put the finishing touches on the plans for our home, our dreams of dinner parties in the finished open kitchen , of repurposed original sconces and refurbished original details , gave way to a less sexy obsession. The mop, the vacuum, our winter coats, the laundry. Specifically: Where would they all go and how could we banish them from sight? In the New York prewar apartments we’d lived in for years, closets were strictly optional and washer-dryers were nonexistent. What made glossy interior photos appealing , I came to realize, was what you didn’t see, because it was tucked into a hidden closet or built-in cabinet. Renovating our house gave us a shot at discreet convenience. Entering the first-floor apartment, pre-renovation, meant coming face -to-face with a faux-wood- grained cabinet door —in actuality, a false front. It was an arguably clever way to bump out the bathroom on the other side to make room for a turquoise jacuzzi-shaped tub. Otto’s initial plan for the enlarged ...

Northgate fire victims locked out as their apartments are looted

Nearly every day, Kristen Bass travels to the Park Meridian apartments in Northgate, seeking reassurance that important pieces of her life are still intact. The 30- unit apartment building where she lived for 18 months was badly damaged in an Aug. 5 fire, leaving Bass and about 70 other tenants searching for new homes while the insurance company documents the extent of the damage, and the landlord makes plans for the building’s demolition. Bass is certain that irreplaceable belongings survived the fire — her family photos, childhood mementos, and a box of her late sister’s belongings that she can’t talk about without breaking into tears. But she can’t retrieve them from the fenced and partially boarded-up building because the landlord says it’s not safe to let her back inside. Mark Vanderveen said in an interview Monday. “The last thing I want to do is put someone ...
