The pressroom at the old Herald-Sun building will soon become self-storage units, and the rows of desks that made up the newsroom will once again become office space. Ticon will retrofit the newspaper building to include 70,000 square feet of climate-controlled self-storage units, 60,000 square feet of office space and an additional 10,000 square feet of retail space. The renovations are likely to be completed next year. The agreement capped a back-and-forth discussion at the meeting of the Downtown Flats Design Review Committee over schematic plans for the $ 135 million tower , on which Playhouse Square hopes to break ground late this year for the project. A revised ground floor plan for the Playhouse Square apartment tower garage shows how the theater district would reserve 1, 900 square feet on the Euclid Avenue side of the garage for retail. Image
In a split vote, the Riverhead Town Board approved both the site plan and the special permit application for Georgica Green Ventures’ proposed 116-unit mixed-use apartment complex Tuesday night . Councilman Tim Hubbard cast the no vote, and Councilwoman Jodi Giglio abstained . “There’s a lot of issues with this project that I’m concerned about,” Mr. Hubbard said, citing parking, a proposed 30- year Industrial Development Agency tax abatement , and the impact the apartments might have on school enrollment. Ms. Giglio said she asked the town ethics board for an opinion on whether she should abstain, since she is an owner of the Summerwind Square apartments downtown , and they recommended she abstain. Wire rope was spun here. Now Trenton factory gets new life as lofts

TRENTON -- The year was 1917 and the Roebling complex's Clark Street Rope Shop in Trenton reopened after being gutted by a fire two years earlier. The new building was ultramodern for its day, with steel trusses, fire-resistant materials and massive windows that flooded the space with natural daylight. It's here where the wire used in Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis plane was believed to be manufactured. Now, a century later, the building has been reinvented as the Roebling Lofts with 16-to-24-foot ceilings, 10-foot windows and environmentally friendly features . The latest project by Trenton- based HHG Development , it aims to combine the old with the new. "It was always obvious to us that this was the best development site in Trenton," Michael Goldstein, one of the principals, said during a recent building tour . "We've always had our eyes on it." But it wasn't until January 2011 that the county approved a development agreement with HH...

Massive apartment project to change face of downtown Boca

Mizner 200 will be one of the largest construction projects in Boca Raton's downtown, offering three nine- story apartment buildings across 9 acres. There will be 384 new apartments and garages with 672 parking spaces. You’ll also see an overhauled stretch of Southeast Mizner Boulevard — inundated with new canopy trees, park space and benches along an 8-foot-wide, paver-laden sidewalk. It’s too early to say when construction will begin. But Mizner 200, at 200 SE Mizner Blvd ., will give the area a much-needed face-lift, some residents say. It’s the latest high- rise project coming to downtown Boca, among the fastest rising in Palm Beach County . “It’s an amazing project and one that I think Boca can stand behind in a very proud fashion,” said Marisela Catilla, a resident of Royal Palm Place just across the street. The city, which this week approved the project, said it’s a product of cooperation between Mizner 200’s developer, Coral Springs-based El- ad National Properties , a...

Inside the Cultural Revival of Eau Claire, Wisconsin

fastest growing city ." src="src" /> Downtown revival: Eau Claire is now Wisconsin's second- fastest growing city . Andrea Paulseth /Volume One The small Wisconsin city is enjoying a cultural revival, thanks to its gorgeous setting, a few well-placed boosters, and a knack for smart development . Justin Green lived in Austin, Texas, most of his life. He opened a music studio there, got married, and had two kids. But by 2016, the 31-year-old felt it was time to leave behind the heat, crowds, and costs of the state’s fast-growing capital. He thought about Madison, Wisconsin, with its strong music scene . But bands kept telling Green to look further north, to Eau Claire. The town is known to indie music fans as the home of the Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival, a two-day event co-founded and curated by singer- songwriter Justin Vernon of the band Bon Iver, who grew up there. So Green and his wife paid a visit. “We were just like, ‘Holy shit! This plac...
