Behind the luxury: Turmoil and shoddy care inside five-star addiction treatment centers

Image
The advertisements are everywhere. On television, a sleek black sedan pulls up to a sprawling estate with a rolling green lawn as a mother recounts how Recovery Centers of America saved her child from drugs. On Facebook, radio, highway billboards, and commuter trains, people are urged to call the company’s instantly memorable hot line : 1-800-RECOVERY. The marketing blitz and an infusion of private equity money have helped make Recovery Centers of America into the self-described fastest- growing addiction treatment provider in the country. King of the Hill: How Vail Resorts Conquered the Ski Industry

Image
Since it was installed in 2010, the "orange bubble" chairlift at The Canyons in Utah has become the resort's most iconic feature. The high-speed quad, which whisks skiers 8,700 feet to the summit of Lookout Peak in just nine minutes, was the first in North America to have heated seats and a plastic shield — the bubble — to protect riders from frigid air and snow along the way. He's the CEO of Vail Resorts, the $1. 4 billion resort powerhouse that owns The Canyons. Vail bought the resort in 2013, and then — through a mix of luck, lawyers, and shrewd business — snatched up neighboring Park City Mountain Resort in 2014, merging the two into a single mega-resort now known as Park City. Vail now owns 14 resorts, which have a total of 305 lifts, and Katz thinks long and hard about all the little things that go into making the properties s...

Scuttlebiz: Mom-and-pop closes while chains remain the same

Funny how your tastes change. There once was a time – back when Coolio actually was cool – when I desperately wanted to live in a town with an Applebee’s . I now reside in a metro area with five, and I’m more concerned that a hole-in-the-wall joint like Silla Cafe is closing. The Broad Street eatery , whose teriyaki chicken has been beloved by downtown denizens for more than two decades, is calling it quits next month. Owned and operated by Felton and Tae Mitchell , the literal “mom-and-pop” restaurant serves its last dish at 855 Broad St. on Sept. 14. “We had fun, but we’re ready to retire now,” Tae said. “We’ve been talking about retiring for a couple years now.” She said that decision to retire was hastened, however, by a steep increase in their rent. “It’s almost double,” she said in a phone interview. Last year the building was purchased by Rafik “Rafi” Bassali , a young real estate investor who is becoming somewhat of a downtown property mogul . The owner of The Swank Company...
