Ramblewood Apartments sold for $100.4M

WYOMING, MI - Ramblewood Apartments, the state's third largest suburban apartment community , has been sold for $100.4 million, it was announced on Monday, June 29. The new owners, an investment group based in Georgia, have plans to upgrade the 1,710- unit community , according to a news release. Berkadia, a Detroit- based commercial real estate broker , said the sale occurred on June 12. "The Grand Rapids rental market is registering historically low vacancy and healthy rent growth ," said David Walstrom, a senior director with Berkadia. "The market's appeal, coupled with the potential to add value through strategic unit upgrades , made Ramblewood an extremely attractive investment ," said Walstrom, adding that the upgrades are expected to result in greater revenue for the partners. Built in phases between 1971 and 1983, Ramblewood Apartments is located at 4277 Stonebridge Drive SW in Wyoming north of 44th Street SW , one mile east of Rivertown Crossing...

Boston.com / Business / Technology / For Craigslist, city was just the ticket

Image
September 13, 2004 Hadley Weinzierl used Craigslist to furnish her Jamaica Plain apartment , and when she bought a Maltese puppy, she sought advice from fellow Craigslisters on a good vet, a cheap dog-walker, and a park where she could let the dog run without a leash. ADVERTISEMENT When Adam Mundt moved from Wisconsin to Boston last year, he used Craigslist to sell his car, and to buy furniture. As a realtor, he regularly lists apartments on the site. Laurie Comer has traded Red Sox , Prince, and ''Lion King" tickets on the site, and her sister used it to reunite a lost kitten with its owner. Four years after Craigslist was launched in Boston, its first tentative step outside of its California base, it has become the city's central bulletin board : a place to post ads for old furniture, free boxes of books, roommates, a quick tryst, a lasting relationship, or a job. (My favorite ad, which appears regularly, is for a male semi- nude housecleaning service : '...

Lack of Bay Area housing prompts rise in ‘super commuters’

As the housing crisis has grown across California, the state has seen a rise in the number of “super commuters,” residents who commute longer hours to cities starved of affordable housing, including those in the Bay Area. While the number of jobs brought into the Bay Area has grown in recent years, the availability of housing has not matched this increase, according to State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley. People working in service-type jobs are not being paid wages that would allow them to afford housing in the cities where they are employed, forcing many to make long commutes to and from work each day, Skinner said. “Those are essential services, but then they’re driven out to living further and further away just to be able to afford somewhere to live,” Skinner said. Census data from 2015 reported San Francisco , Alameda and Contra Costa counties’ average commute times to be 31.7 minutes, 30.7 minutes and 35.3 minutes respectively — an increase from 2010, when the commute times for...

Top restaurateurs talk ‘going corporate’ in the ever-changing culinary landscape

Image
Almost 10 years ago, Cactus Club Cafe made an announcement that sent shockwaves across the food world. Rob Feenie, then one of the country’s brightest culinary stars , would be going to work for the Vancouver-based “casual fine dining” chain. The move was calculated on both sides – at the time, Feenie was looking for a stable place to land after walking away from his two restaurants, the result of an acrimonious split with his former business partners. And Cactus Club could cash in on the cachet and street cred a name such as Feenie’s carried at a time when the power of food culture and food television (of which Feenie had been a star) was becoming fully realized. Still, the reaction was swift. “Yikes, Feenie really sold out on this one,” one commenter on the the foodie forum eGullet said at the time. “The power of the dollar!” That announcement was just the start. In the near-decade since, many of the best restaurants across Canada have seen their top talent leave for jobs at c...
