Stonebridge a shining example of affordable housing | Letters to the Editor

The continued discussion of housing issues in St. Helena raises the question of how to successfully develop and manage affordable housing in a community the size of our beautiful city. The family housing at the Stonebridge Apartments , located at 990 College Ave., is a proven example of how to create a sustainable community of children, parents and seniors. The Stonebridge Housing Tax Credit property is a type of regulated affordable housing serving low - and very-low- income households on fixed, i.e. Social Security, or lower incomes between 50 percent and not to exceed 60 percent of the Napa County area median income (AMI). For example, a family of four with an income below $51,650 per year would qualify for the program. Monthly rents are charged accordingly at the 50 percent or 60 percent AMI levels . The current rent schedule is the following: • A one-bedroom unit at 50 percent AMI is $420, or $768 at 60 percent; • Two-bedroom unit, $469 to $918; • Three-bedroom unit, $514 ...

Is New Orleans worth it? | News | Gambit Weekly

At the end of one sticky month during the summer of 2017, Elizabeth Bolles will have finished packing the contents of her Riverbend apartment. She, her partner, their two young sons and two dogs will then pile into her Subaru and drive 350 miles to Houston, where her partner will start a new job.   The move is the upshot of six years of frustration and disappointment for Bolles since she graduated from Tulane University's law school in 2011. Since then, she's struggled to find a well-paying job in New Orleans; she's been runner-up for several positions and has worked odd jobs and short-term gigs to make ends meet . She's in the same boat as many of her friends and acquaintances in the city — a one- time National Merit Scholar who's been waiting tables for a decade, a buddy with two doctorates who can't find a professional job .   "You hear one person's story," Bolles says, "and you think maybe there's something going on with them, maybe...

Heated Rematch in Central Brooklyn, Where Incumbent Seeks to Hold City Council Seat

Image
Council Member Laurie Cumbo (@cmlauriecumbo) Hundreds of Crown Heights residents and community activists laughed and jeered at a recent community forum as a lanky man wearing a paper mask of Mayor Bill de Blasio joked about bringing affordable housing to their neighborhood. The event was punctuated by moments of levity but mostly dominated by anger from residents who feel their elected representatives have sold out their interests to the real estate industry , with a focus on the proposed redevelopment of the vacant Bedford Union Armory . The de Blasio administration , with a developer, is proposing a combination of affordable and market rate rental apartments , condominium units, and recreation space for the massive site. City Council Member Laurie Cumbo , who represents the district, did not attend the August 2 forum focused on the project -- she was just days from giving birth to a son -- and when representatives of her office tried to speak, they were shouted down. The ev...

OLD TIMER The Stewart apartments occupy the top two floors of this 1921 building at the corner of Southwest Broadway and Ankeny. Patrick Alexander IN JUNE , the rumors began wafting through the Stewart Apartments like the cigarette smoke that often clouds its halls. The 55-unit building’s long-time manager had passed away on May 28. If no one stepped in to replace him, 66 residents would soon be looking for a place to live—with little hope of finding a suitable spot. The first rumblings of a looming mass eviction came not long after apartment manager Mike Narver ’s death. But by August 11—20 days before Narver’s lease to run the building was set to expire—no one was any clearer on their future. “It’s so back and forth,” said Eddie Grant, a 62-year old resident who clerks the Stewart’s front desk, as he emptied a garbage bin in the building’s lobby last week. “Now I heard we might be out at by the end of the month, or next week.” Marge Appling , a 20-year resident and the building’s...
