6 Changes Needed on Commerce & North » Urban Milwaukee

Image
Sign-up for the Urban Milwaukee daily email Intersection of N. Commerce St and E. North Ave. The meeting of Commerce and North — just east of Humboldt Ave. — is one of the busiest un-signalized intersections in the city. The number of issues presented by this important intersection convince me it merits some review and revision by the city. North Avenue is a primary east-west corridor which runs west from Lake Michigan across the entire length of the city. It is a busy street at nearly all hours and according to WISDOT, it carries over 30,000 vehicles a day. Commerce Street, meanwhile, has over the course of the last 20 years transformed from dormancy to being lined with hundreds of apartments and condominiums and many thousands of new daily users. Despite the significant amounts of development that have occurred around Commerce and North, the intersection has not been retrofitted to account for those changes. What Works Commerce and North is a victim of its success – an increasingly ...

One of the housing projects that the City Council considered on Tuesday is a 200-unit multi- family apartment complex (shown with a green border) near the intersection of Willow Lake Road and Highway 89; it’s currently the Dells View Mobile Home Park . PRESCOTT – Traffic concerns dominated much of the discussion this week on a 200- unit apartment complex planned near the Willow Lake Road / Prescott Lakes Parkway intersection. Several residents voiced worries at the Tuesday, Sept. 13, Prescott City Council meeting that Prescott Lakes Villas , a seven- building apartment complex planned at 2051 Willow Lake Road , would increase traffic congestion on Willow Lake Road – especially at the busy interse...

Pleasanton council to consider confirming new smoking restrictions for apartments | News

The Pleasanton City Council is set Tuesday to consider final approval of a proposed ordinance to implement stringent smoking regulations for rental apartments across the city. On track to take effect early next year, the new restrictions would include banning smoking inside individual units , on balconies and patios, in all indoor and outdoor common areas and within 25 feet of those locations at apartment complexes under single ownership with two or more leased units. The council gave unanimous support to the proposed ordinance during a first reading in June, but asked city staff to do more research on how to handle medical marijuana before giving final approval . Under the recommendation from city staff, the ordinance would allow medical marijuana smoking inside apartment units "if tenant provides landlord written documentation that tenant needs it for medical purposes , no alternative means of delivery or ingestion are available and tenant is unable to smoke o...

100 pack hearing on Campana affordable housing proposal, offer split opinions

Supporters and opponents of a proposed conversion of the historic Campana building to affordable housing on the borders of Batavia and Geneva packed another meeting this week to share their views. About 100 people attended the continuation Wednesday of an Aug. 2 public hearing before the plan commission , a citizen- appointed advisory panel to the Batavia City Council . On one side were residents worried about traffic, the influx of students in the Geneva schools and whether the former 1936 factory is suitable for living quarters. On the other side were proponents of affordable housing and historic preservation . Evergreen Real Estate Group has submitted a zoning application with Batavia to put 80 market-rate and income restricted apartments into the 131,000-square-foot building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and received a local historic landmark designation in 2003. Sandra Ellis said the Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 intersection has been known as a...

DC Hotels Kept Canceling On Richard Spencer, So He Had To Hold A Press Conference In An Apartment

Following violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, white nationalist Richard Spencer tried to hold a private press conference in Washington, DC, on Monday. But two different hotels in DC canceled on him before the events were scheduled to start. In the end, Spencer, a leader of the alt-right movement, had to hold the press conference in an apartment he calls an office and part-time residence across the river in Alexandria, Virginia. Spencer, who was in Charlottesville and participated in the rally, has denied that he was one of the organizers of the events there this weekend. He was, however, prominently displayed on flyers advertising the rally. Spencer declined to join organizers at a press conference in Charlottesville this weekend, but said he would hold one in DC on Monday. He initially planned to hold a press conference at 3 p.m. at the Sofitel Hotel in downtown DC, just a few blocks from the White House. The location was kep...

The Run-down Stewart Apartments Are a Sanctuary for Poor Portlanders - News

OLD TIMER The Stewart apartments occupy the top two floors of this 1921 building at the corner of Southwest Broadway and Ankeny. Patrick Alexander IN JUNE , the rumors began wafting through the Stewart Apartments like the cigarette smoke that often clouds its halls. The 55-unit building’s long-time manager had passed away on May 28. If no one stepped in to replace him, 66 residents would soon be looking for a place to live—with little hope of finding a suitable spot. The first rumblings of a looming mass eviction came not long after apartment manager Mike Narver ’s death. But by August 11—20 days before Narver’s lease to run the building was set to expire—no one was any clearer on their future. “It’s so back and forth,” said Eddie Grant, a 62-year old resident who clerks the Stewart’s front desk, as he emptied a garbage bin in the building’s lobby last week. “Now I heard we might be out at by the end of the month, or next week.” Marge Appling , a 20-year resident and the building’s...

Scuttlebiz: Mom-and-pop closes while chains remain the same

Funny how your tastes change. There once was a time – back when Coolio actually was cool – when I desperately wanted to live in a town with an Applebee’s . I now reside in a metro area with five, and I’m more concerned that a hole-in-the-wall joint like Silla Cafe is closing. The Broad Street eatery , whose teriyaki chicken has been beloved by downtown denizens for more than two decades, is calling it quits next month. Owned and operated by Felton and Tae Mitchell , the literal “mom-and-pop” restaurant serves its last dish at 855 Broad St. on Sept. 14. “We had fun, but we’re ready to retire now,” Tae said. “We’ve been talking about retiring for a couple years now.” She said that decision to retire was hastened, however, by a steep increase in their rent. “It’s almost double,” she said in a phone interview. Last year the building was purchased by Rafik “Rafi” Bassali , a young real estate investor who is becoming somewhat of a downtown property mogul . The owner of The Swank Company...

MARTINEZ — Saying the project will provide needed housing and almost single-handedly rejuvenate a threadbare commercial corridor , Contra Costa County supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved the $100 million Saranap Village commercial/retail mixed use project that figures to transform a tired commercial strip between Walnut Creek and Lafayette. The supervisors approved zoning and planning changes needed for the project, which would have up to 198 housing units (122 apartments, 76 condos), approximately 21,522 square feet of commercial space (including a small grocery store ) and 492 parking spaces, on the street and in three parking structures. The project will include parcels on both sides of Boulevard Way, this village’s main thoroughfare. “These are exactly the kinds of projects we need in the Bay Area to meet housing demand and to beautify ...

Residents continue to debate Campana apartment project in Batavia

Batavia residents continued to speak out about whether the city should let apartments be built in the landmark Campana factory building on Wednesday during a continuation of a plan commission public hearing . Just as it was when the hearing began on Aug. 2, the meeting room was filled, and an overflow was set up in a nearby conference room so people could watch it on television. Residents again expressed concern about adequate parking, whether stormwater displaced by increased parking would be well-handled, if the Geneva school district would get enough in property taxes to handle the influx of students expected, and about safety at the intersection of Fabyan Parkway and Batavia Avenue . Several more spoke about whether the building was even a suitable place to live. "Why was a housing project ever proposed for the Campana building ? It's not suitable for human habitation," said Guy Prisco of Batavia, citing the glass block windows an...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Radcliff Police say three people have been charged with attempted murder after they shot up several apartments in Hardin County. The incident took place on Tuesday, Aug. 8, on N. Woodland Drive, near the intersection of N. Dixie Boulevard and N. Wilson Road. One of the victims was later able to identify Anderson, Dodds and Pearson from a lineup of photos, according to the arrest reports.  Days later, on Friday night, police were sent to an apartment on Navaho Drive, near the scene of the shooting, after someone reported that drugs were being sold at that location. When officers arrived, they say they could detect a strong odor of...

If the project receives all the necessary approvals, the developers could break ground on the...

Controversial Overlook at Roland Park moves forward

Image
A controversial North Baltimore apartment project cleared its final hurdle when Mayor Catherine Pugh ratified its designation as a planned unit development . Developer Blue Ocean can start work on the roughly $40 million Overlook at Roland Park. The Baltimore- based developer plans a six-story, 148- unit luxury apartment building on the wooded 12-acre parcel near the intersection of Falls Road and Northern Parkway in North Roland Park . The project faced significant opposition from some residents in North Roland Park concerned about increased traffic, despite receiving the support of two neighborhood associations. Blue Ocean has agreed to preserve more than half the site for forest conservation or green space. The project includes a parking garage, swimming pool, fitness center, media room and an indoor sports court . Blue Ocean President Jonathan Ehrenfeld said the project will be the area’s first new apartment community in several decades. A timeline for the start of constr...
