It was around 2:30 a.m. when the fire broke out at  Colonial Gardens Apartment Complex near 88th and Broadmoor Street. The fire quickly became a two-alarm fire when responding units heard reports that people were trapped. The first units on the scene were greeted by several burn patients along with heavy smoke and fire coming from the front and back of the two- story apartment building . Paramedics began treating the burn patients, while firefighters began an aggressive search and fire attack. Once inside, firefighters found two children dead. The Atlantic Monthly/Volume 18/Number 105/Passages from Hawthorne's Note-Books

PASSAGES FROM HAWTHORNE'S NOTE-BOOKS. C ONCORD, August 5, 1842.—A rainy day,—a rainy day. I am commanded to take pen in hand, and I am therefore banished to the little ten-foot- square apartment misnamed my study; but perhaps the dismalness of the day and the dulness of my solitude will be the prominent characteristics of what I write. And what is there to write about? Happiness has no succession of events, because it is a part of eternity; and we have been living in eternity ever since we came to this old manse. Like Enoch, we seem to have been translated to the other state of being, without having passed through death. Our spirits must have flitted away unconsciously, and we can only perceive that we have cast off our mortal part by the more real and earnest life of our souls. Externally, our Paradise has very much the aspect of a pleasant old domicile on earth. This antique house—for it looks antique, though it was created by Providence expressly for our use, and at the precis

Candle Believed To Be Behind Fire Damaging 10 Apartment Units In Shelby Township « CBS Detroit

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) — A single candle is believed to be the cause of a fire which damaged about a dozen apartments in Shelby Township . Firefighters believe a candle tipped over while a resident in the Pebble Creek Apartments slept and burned for a while before the resident woke up to a smoldering scene. Shelby Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski says the man and his son tried to move the burning couch out of the apartment but couldn’t do it. “Him and his son tried to get the couch out — unable to because of the smoke — so they got out called us, and by the time our first engine got here from like a mile and a half away – next thing you know the fire was through the apartment, through the roof and shooting up in the air,” said Swinkowski. A total of 10 units in the complex were damaged — putting dozens of people scurrying for safety and now alternative housing. Nieghbor Lonnie O’Bryant lives next door to where the fire started: “There are a lot of innocent people who had nothing to do with

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Two children, ages 3 and 5 years old, died in an overnight fire just before 2:30 a.m. at the Colonial Gardens Apartments in Overland Park. Seven others, including their mother, were injured. The family confirmed that the children are five-year-old Henry Mendoza-Carter Jr. and three-year-old Alexis Mendoza-Carter. Alexis and Henry Mendoza-Carter were tragically killed in an apartment fire early Tuesday morning in Overland Park, Kansas. The young girl and her older brother apparently became trapped in a multi-unit fire in the 8800 block of Broadmoor. The fire led some residents to throw themselves out windows and caused others to brave burning staircases to reach safety. Crews from the Overland Park and Leawood Fire Departments responded and soon called a second alarm when they learned there were people trapped inside . When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the front and back of the two- story apartment building . Paramedics treated b

What we know about James Alex Fields Jr., the suspect in the Charlottesville car crash

James Alex Fields Jr ., the 20-year-old Ohio man police say deliberately accelerated his car into a crowd of counterprotesters on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a young woman, appeared in court today for the first time and was denied bail. Heather Heyer, 32, an activist who was protesting against a white nationalist gathering that was taking place in the city that day, was killed in the crash. At least 19 others were injured. Attorney General Jeff Sessions told ABC News on Monday that the incident "does meet the definition of domestic terrorism" under U.S. law, and confirmed that the Department of Justice is pursuing what Fields allegedly did "in every way that we can make a case." Here's what we know about Fields, his background, and the alleged crime he perpetrated: Fields "thought Nazis were pretty cool guys " in the words of Derek Weimer, who told ABC News that he taught World History to Fields, as well as a course called Am

Why Seattle Builds Apartments, but Vancouver, BC, Builds Condos

Image
When it comes to condominium development , Cascadia’s two largest cities couldn ’t be more different. Last year nearly 60 percent of new housing starts in the city of Vancouver, BC , were condominiums; meanwhile, Seattle saw no new condominium buildings open . And that’s not changing anytime soon: less than 10 percent of all building slated for downtown Seattle in the next three years will be condos. What’s the difference—why the blossoming of condominium construction in one city and the almost complete dearth in the other? The short answer is economics. In Vancouver, apartments are saddled with an unfavorable tax code , making condos the more lucrative multi- family housing investment even despite high rental demand . In Seattle’s skyrocketing rental market , one that’s climbed even faster than the condo market in recent years, apartment buildings are much more financially attractive, while condos come with bigger risks and, typically, lower returns. Compounding this profit differe
