Suspect pleads not guilty in slaying of Tennessee nurse

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A man accused of killing a nurse in her Tennessee apartment has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Media outlets report 25-year-old Christopher McLawhorn pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, burglary and theft charges during an arraignment on Wednesday.

Police say that on Feb. 28, McLawhorn randomly broke into 23-year-old Tiffany Ferguson’s Nashville apartment and stabbed her to death. Ferguson was a nurse at Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville.

McLawhorn told Judge Steve Dozier that he doesn’t have money to hire an attorney. He was appointed a public defender.

McLawhorn faces life in prison if found guilty. A trial date has not yet been set. He’s scheduled to make another court appearance on Sept. 21.
