Wildwood approves retail development on U.S. 301 near Peppertree Apartments
The Wildwood City Commission Monday night approved the first phase of a retail development along U.S. 301 near the Peppertree Apartments.
Peppertree Plaza, located at the southwest corner of U.S. 301 and Peppertree Lane, will include a 14,820-square-foot drug store, another 16,500 square feet for more retail and paved parking.
Mayor Ed Wolf said the retail development will serve 300 units in the Peppertree Apartments and a proposed 106-home subdivision nearby.
Commissioner Robby Strickland said he is concerned about traffic problems that could arise from the development.
“There’s about as much traffic at that intersection as on (County Road) 472,” he said.
Strickland said a traffic light might be needed, but Melanie Peavy, development services director, said traffic lights along major highways sometimes cause more of a hazard.
The state Department of Transportation last spring turned down a request for a traffic light at County Road 472 and U.S. 301.
Commissioners also approved the site plan for an Autozone store on County Road 466 near U.S. 301. The 1.09-acre site, annexed last summer, was the former location site of the Oxford fire station which was demolished about two years ago.
