TRIADELPHIA –Mere yards from the hustle and bustle of The Highlands, brand new apartments featuring up to three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and 1,500 square feet of living space are now open at Highland Park.

Located on the south side of Interstate 70, the development is continues to take shape, but Regional Manager Melanie Goode said a “significant portion” of the 200 units are already occupied. While she declined to identify the exact amount of private money invested, she said it is easily a “multi-million-dollar project.”

“We found there was substantial demand in the market here,” she said. “There are a lot of people moving to the area, but there are others who would like to move here, but can’t find what they are looking for.”

Goode said the development is purely market-based and commercial, which means it is not a public housing project. The new construction includes single bedroom units that she said rent for about $900, while the larger townhouse units can go for about $1,550 per month.

“The oil and natural gas boom is certainly a portion of the demand right now, but there is a lot more going on. We have young professionals, as well as some baby boomers,” Goode said of Highland Park residents.

Amenities already in place include a basketball court, a playground and a picnic area. Developers plan to complete clubhouse with both a fitness room and a community room. There is also an outdoor pool in the works, while the complex is pet-friendly.

“The location is idea because it is right on Interstate 70, and is so close to shopping at The Highlands,” Goode said. “There are new apartments opening in downtown Wheeling, but some people don’t want to live in downtown Wheeling.”

Indeed, in recent months, the Boury Lofts and Stone Center Lofts have opened in Wheeling. While these properties fit the needs of some, others may prefer the more suburban environment of Highland Park, Goode said.

“We also have some fully furnished options that include everything up to housewares,” Goode said. “All the resident needs to do is move in.”

Ohio County Commissioner Orphy Klempa said the property on which the complex sits was never owned by the county. As far as he knows, the only work performed by the county involving Highland Park would be stretching water and sewer lines to the property.

“They’ve obviously done their due diligence. We’re very hopeful that this works well for them,” Klempa said. “It’s clearly a substantial investment, so we’re very thankful they’ve come here.”
