New apartments groundbreaking, work beginning on Water St. - FOX10 News

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday for a new development featuring more than 250 upscale apartments in downtown Mobile.

The groundbreaking comes just as the first phase of work is about to begin on a city project to make downtown more pedestrian friendly.

The shovels came out Wednesday morning to break ground for the new Meridian at the Port complex.

Developers say it will feature more than 250 upscale apartments.

David Hanchrow with Bristol Development said, "People are looking to become less car dependent or, at least, shorten their commute, so, by living here at Meridian at the Port, if you work downtown or want to enjoy the restaurants downtown, you're just a short walk away."

Civic leaders say the project could potentially transform the downtown area, helping to attract grocery stores and retail outlets.

Fred Rendfrey, Downtown Economic Development Director with the Downtown Mobile Alliance said, "Other investors and developers take notice, and the retail follows the rooftops."

Hanchrow said, "And with all the improvements that the city is going to be doing on Water Street to make it more pedestrian friendly, it will really be an advantage to the residents."

One phase of those improvements is scheduled to begin Monday when the city will begin improving crosswalks and pedestrian access to Water Street.

Other plans include adding bicycle and pedestrian lanes, reducing car lanes from six to four, and new traffic signals to improve traffic flow.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson said, "Everybody that's wanting to do a big development downtown wants to see the plans for Water Street. They want to see the connectivity to Beauregard and to Broad Streets, and, so, you'll just have a huge loop."

Handyman's Home Improvement Center is across the street fro the new development.

Owner Thurmon Bell said, "I think anything they do down here will be good."

Developers hope to have the first apartments open by the beginning of 2019.

The project will cost about $46 million.
