Campbell police officers say they had to pull a child endangering suspect out of a fruit cellar in order to arrest him for allegedly breaking the wrist of his two-month-old daughter. Now that suspect faces a charge of obstructing justice as well.
Police say they found 20-year-old Corinthians White barricaded in the cellar of his Delmar Street home on Tuesday, and had to grab his arms to pull him out after he refused officer's orders to surrender.
The child endangering charge stems from a report filed by White's live-in girlfriend who told police that on August 12 White may have broken the wrist of her two-month-old daughter. White is also the infant's father, according to the woman.
"To me, he's not even a human being and has no place in our society, none," said Campbell Police Chief Dennis Puskarcik.
Doctors at Northside Hospital tell police that the baby had several fresh broken bones along with others that were in the process of healing, according to a police report.
The report also says that the injuries did not appear to be accidental.
"As far as child abuse, it is one of the worst that I have ever seen or even heard of," said Puskarcik.
The baby was transferred to Akron Children's Hospital and Mahoning County Children's Services was contacted.
Campbell police say it will be up to prosecutors, but the mother could face charges as well.
"They wanted to do a full body scan and she refused it, I believe at Northside," said Lt. Kevin Sferra. " When she went to Akron Children's, they did it and that right there tells me she was aware they were going to find something else and there must be something else that she already knew about which makes her just as culpable," he said.
White is in the Mahoning County jail. He is scheduled to appear in Campbell Municipal Court on Friday to answer the charges.
