Sheriff Honors Spring Man Who Rescued Abandoned Baby

HUMBLE, TX — A Spring man who rescued an abandoned infant left in an open field in northwest Houston, was honored by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez Wednesday night at the Harris County Sheriff's Training Academy in Humble.

Albert Peterson was leaving for work at about 5 a.m. on Aug. 10, when he heard a baby crying.

At first, Peterson, who lives at the Bridges of Cypress Creek apartments at Red Oak Drive and Interstate 45, thought the noise was a toy, or an animal, and he followed the sound and found an infant, crying and covered in bugs and dirt.

He picked up the baby, who was just a few hours old, and carried her back to his apartment and called police.

While they waited, Peterson and his wife cleaned the baby up, wrapped her in a sheet and fed her milk, until police arrived.

It was this action that likely saved the baby’s life, KPRC reported. Gonzalez said it was only right to recognize Peterson and his wife for their goodwill and their actions to help an innocent baby, and that too often citizens who step up don’t get recognized. Meanwhile, the baby is in the custody of Child Protective Services and continues to recover from a bacterial infection at Texas Children's Hospital in The Woodlands. The child’s mother, who was identified as Sidney Woytasczyk, 21, faces felony child abandonment charges and is in the Harris County Jail.
