Aesthetically appealing: five hand-crafted homes

Where: Overlooking the North Star Nature Preserve in Aspen, a ski resort in winter and hiking haven in summer in the Rocky Mountains. Aspen-Pitkin County Airport is a 25-minute drive, with connections to Chicago and Los Angeles international airports.

What: A seven-bedroom, six-bathroom lodge with 8,836 sq ft of living space and 7.72 acres of land. There are also five fireplaces, two hot tubs and 4,000 sq ft of decking.

Why: Hand-built by carpenters, the lodge includes wooden beams from Yellowstone National Park, bark-lined walls and hand-crafted antique tiles, which depict tales of America’s discovery by white settlers. Throughout the house branches have been shaped into staircases, chairs and chandeliers.

Where: Overlooking Hurepiti Bay on Taha’a, part of the Leeward Islands along with Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Raiatea airport is a 25-minute boat ride, where a half-hour flight takes you to Faa’a international airport in Tahiti.

What: A three-bedroom, three-bathroom house, built to be environmentally sustainable. The property is set within three hectares of land and an outdoor terrace leads on to the garden and a stretch of private waterfront.

Why: The house was made by local carpenters in a traditional Polynesian style with a thatched-palm roof and noble hardwood throughout the interior, including the handmade rope and wood spiral staircase.

Where: On Campo Santo Stefano, a square in central Venice, less than a 10-minute walk from St Mark’s Square. Marco Polo international airport is 35 minutes by water taxi.

Where: In Sho’eva, a moshav, or small settlement, about 25 minutes’ drive west from Jerusalem city centre. Ben Gurion international airport is about half an hour’s drive.

What: A five-bedroom, four-bathroom house with nearly 5,400 sq ft of living space and large wooden beams, perched on a hillside. Outside, a rose garden and swimming pool overlook the valley beyond.

Why: Parts of the house were hand-crafted by the current owners, who are artists and architects, including the stone walkways and waterfall beside a separate outdoor artist’s studio.
