Millennials starting out can afford a one-bedroom. However, studio apartments also are available.

Seniors on a fixed income can lease a two-bedroom to have a place for the grandkids-or their hobbies.

And, those of us, like myself, still making a penny scream after The Great Recession, find the best rental deal on the East Coast.

What am I getting? Every day, I enjoy an eat-in-kitchen, pantry the size of a small bedroom, two walk-in closets, and a large bedroom and living room - with all utilities included. My animal companion has lots of buddies in the G complex. They congregate in the section's very own pet park.

The monthly nut for both my and the dog's rent is $132 less than what I ponied up in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1987, with no dog. 

You bet, there is also a fitness center. Next to it, the Hillbrook staff often host special events for the holidays. 

Since I moved to Hillbrook I have squirreled away enough to start investing again. My brokerage account is with Edward Jones' Michael J. Hernan. I have been so pleased with the results that I also shifted my Roth IRA to Edward Jones. 

Meanwhile, others in my age bracket are getting on waiting lists for those government subsidized over-55 rentals. They assume that's all they can afford.

That's as limiting an assumption as that the aging have to retire. I invited a university professor based in Arizona to visit me. Shock! AZ living is supposedly the ultimate bargain for the aging.

Hillbrookinterior Her monthly lease for 520-square-feet, with no utilities paid, is $220 higher than is mine. And, no, she doesn't have an eat-in kitchen.

Since her visit she is looking into adjunct teaching positions in Eastern OH. With much lower rent she can afford to semi-retire.
