Apartment complex with 256 units proposed near Mall of Georgia | News

A more than 250- unit apartment complex could be coming to the area between the Mall of Georgia and Coolray Field. The county’s Planning Commission is scheduled to consider a request by Pedcor Investments to recommend approval of a 256- unit apartment complex on 23.2 acres at the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Laurel Crossing Parkway next month. The site is east of Buford Drive and just south of Interstate 85 in the Mall of Georgia Overlay District . “The proposed development would add an important component to that encouraged mix of uses,” attorney Shane Lanham wrote in a letter to county officials. “Moreover, the proposed development is consistent with established development patterns and land uses in the area. “More intense commercial and office uses are dominant along major travel corridors with land uses transitioning to lower density developments moving off the roadway. The property is not located directly on Buford Drive, but on Laurel Crossing Parkway behind existing commercia...

Fairfield Co loses jobs, a dream of changing its fortunes | News

JENKINSVILLE (AP) — For the better part of a decade, thousands of people showed up in this town on the shores of Lake Monticello and got to work on a project that was sure to change its fortunes. As a pair of nuclear reactors rose behind the gates of the V.C. Summer power plant , a town of fewer than 100 residents suddenly had a few thousand. Campsites and restaurants sprang up before long to meet the new need, banking on a few more years of construction work and decades of maintenance to come. The boom in this rural corner of Fairfield County coincided with rising hopes in Winnsboro, the county seat, which is 25 minutes east on winding backroads. South Carolina Electric & Gas was spending billions of dollars to build two of America's first new nuclear reactors since the 1980s, and county officials expected a property tax windfall — tens of millions of dollars every year for decades. They imagined new fortunes for one of the state's smallest counties, a place with a sh...

Records released this week show authorities battling the deadly Sevier County wildfires looked to an expected downpour that came too late for salvation as crews struggled in a desperate tug-of-war with skyscraper-sized flames the night of Nov. 28, 2016. As the blaze approached the city limits, authorities knew the rain wouldn't arrive for another 12 hours. Hotel residents paid up to $1,000 a month to face bedbugs, roaches

Image
For more than two years, city inspectors have documented unsafe and squalid conditions at a weekly hotel near uptown that houses low-income families with children, the disabled and others with nowhere else to go. Inspectors found rooms with no heat or air conditioning , piles of garbage, bedbugs and broken windows among other problems at the Airport Parkway Inn and Suites. Former tenants and a neighboring business complain the building on Wilkinson Boulevard is a magnet for drugs and crime. Now, Charlotte officials are taking steps that could lead to the demolition of the hotel, a rare move the city has not taken in at least seven years against a lodging establishment. The building is part of a virtually unnoticed housing sector in Charlotte, where hundreds of people suffering from addiction and mental illness or simply with few other options depend on weekly hotel rooms for permanent shelter. While tenants avoid sleeping on the streets, they often stay in decrepit and vermin-in...

Fight Continues Over Proposed Apartments In Campana Factory Building

KANE COUNTY, IL -- The fight continues over whether city officials in Batavia should move forward with the redevelopment of the historic Campana factory building . Those in support of the project contend the area needs housing for low-income workers and the 80- unit apartment complex would fill that need, the Kane County Chronicle reports . “By including affordable rental units in 80 percent of the Campana redevelopment project , approval of this project will help our communities meet the critical housing needs of our low-wage-earning, working citizens,” said Batavia resident Patti Lackman of the League. Those against the plan spoke up against whether apartments were the right fit for the historic building , the Daily Herald reports . "Why was a housing project ever proposed for the Campana building ? It's not suitable for human habitation," said Guy Prisco of Batavia. He cited the glass block windows and supports which would run down the center of the interior hallwa...

Fort Worth's Main Street closing until 2020 for construction

Image
Motorists who use North Main Street to travel between downtown Fort Worth and the Stockyards should be prepared to use a detour — for roughly the next three years. Starting at 3 a.m. Saturday, North Main Street will be closed in both directions between Northeast Seventh and 11th streets — not far from LaGrave Field and the Coyote Drive-In theater. Traffic will be detoured to Commerce Street and delays for drivers are expected to be minimal. The reason? Workers will be building a new bridge as part of the nearly $ 1 billion Panther Island project that will eventually carry North Main Street traffic over a re-routed portion of the Trinity River. The bridge will be built over dry land so that when the money is available to re-route the river, the road will already be in place. The closure of the four-block stretch of North Main Street is expected to last until some time in 2020, officials said. “Access to local businesses on North Main Street will be maintained, and the detour w...
