Nearly every day, Kristen Bass travels to the Park Meridian apartments in Northgate, seeking reassurance that important pieces of her life are still intact. Bass is certain that irreplaceable belongings survived the fire — her family photos, childhood mementos, and a box of her late sister’s belongings that she can’t talk about without breaking into tears. White nationalist s, neo-Nazis and members of the "alt-right" clash with counter-protesters as they enter Lee Park during the "Unite the Right" rally Aug. 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, Virginia. After clashes with anti-fascist protesters and police the rally was declared an unlawful gathering and people were forced out of Lee Park, where a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee is slated to be removed. (Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) One national survey says nine hate groups are operating in Wisconsin, although the nature of such movements makes it difficult to know their scope or predict when they will come out of the shadows, experts say. The hatred that spawned a white nationalist rally and led to a counterprotester's death last weekend isn’t unique to Charlottesville, Virginia, although it typically takes a subtler form than burning crosses and filling streets with chanting zealots. Amy Saltzman asaltzman@wickedlocal.com @cambridgechron Craigslist apartment scams continue to be a problem in Cambridge with 27 reported rental scams through Oct. 17 of this year versus 31 total in 2015, according to police. People looking to move to the country, such as exchange students or those traveling to the U.S. on work visas, are frequent targets of these scams, making Cambridge’s transient university populations particularly vulnerable. “There’s certainly a steady diet of these crimes,” said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department . “Unfortunately, they are very difficult to investigate.” Warnick said part of the problem is that it can be difficult to figure out the location of a website or the origin of an email in order to identify a suspect. “The crimes are difficult to investigate as fraud over the Internet does not need a physical location, nor personnel, nor phones,” he said. “Internet fraud is disjointed, and spread ...
