Two people shot on Kristin Drive

Two people who were shot late Tuesday night on Kristin Drive are expected to survive their wounds after being rushed to Vidant Medical Center , the Greenville Police Department reported . About 11:50 p.m., dispatchers sent officers to the 100 block of Kristin Drive off S.W. Greenville Boulevard for a report of shots fired, the department reported . When they arrived, the officers discovered that two young men had been shot. The victims, Randell Maleak Turnage , 18, and Robere Summers Coward , 19, were transported to the hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries , according to reports. While on the scene, officers discovered an apartment and an unoccupied vehicle had also been struck by gunfire. There were no additional injuries, although the police report listed two adults, two teenagers and two juveniles living in the building as additional victims. Two homicides in 7 hours bumps city’s killings to 57

Two people were killed over a seven-hour stretch in Charlotte, starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, bringing the city’s homicide total to 57 for the year. Charlotte is on pace to record more than 90 homicides this year, a dramatic jump. Last year, the city had 67. The latest killing occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Friday in the 2300 block of Ginger Lane, off East W.T. Harris Boulevard. The incident began as a carjacking, reported the Observer’s news partner WBTV . Officers said they arrived at the Meadowbrook apartments and found a man and woman who had been shot. The man died, but the woman was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center with non- life threatening injuries , police said. Police identified the dead man as Joshua Anthoni Burris , 23. Authorities initially identified him as Joshua Duckworth. The woman has not yet been identified, but WBTV reported she is 19 years old. Candle Believed To Be Behind Fire Damaging 10 Apartment Units In Shelby Township « CBS Detroit

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) — A single candle is believed to be the cause of a fire which damaged about a dozen apartments in Shelby Township . Firefighters believe a candle tipped over while a resident in the Pebble Creek Apartments slept and burned for a while before the resident woke up to a smoldering scene. Shelby Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski says the man and his son tried to move the burning couch out of the apartment but couldn’t do it. “Him and his son tried to get the couch out — unable to because of the smoke — so they got out called us, and by the time our first engine got here from like a mile and a half away – next thing you know the fire was through the apartment, through the roof and shooting up in the air,” said Swinkowski. A total of 10 units in the complex were damaged — putting dozens of people scurrying for safety and now alternative housing. Colonial Garden Apartments fire kills two children in Overland Park

Two young children were killed and several others were injured when fire swept through their apartment building early Tuesday in Overland Park. The children’s mother and three men from another apartment were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries in the fire at Colonial Gardens Apartments , 8845 Broadmoor Court, according to Jason Rhodes, a spokesman for the Overland Park Fire Department . Two of the injured men reportedly jumped from the second floor to escape the blaze. Fire investigators are looking into whether there were working smoke alarms in the apartments. They have received conflicting reports , Rhodes said. The fire was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m. at the apartment complex. While firefighters were in route, there were reports of victims being trapped inside the burning building so a second alarm was called, Rhodes said. Year after Minnesota woman was fatally run over at her mailbox, driver is charged

AITKIN, Minn. – A Deerwood man has been charged after the June 2016 death of an Aitkin County woman fatally struck by a vehicle near her mailbox in north- central Minnesota . Timothy Paul Kostal , 61, was charged last month with a misdemeanor for careless driving on June 10, 2016, the day of the fatal incident. Kostal is scheduled for a Monday morning arraignment at the Aitkin County Courthouse . If convicted, Kostal could face a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. Police investigate 2 more shooting deaths in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE -- Police in Charlotte are investigating two shooting deaths. The first shooting was reported around 7:20 p.m. Thursday on Pleasant Dale Drive . Wallace said officers found 25-year-old Jamario Lacatria McNeely dead . A man at the scene who talked with officers has now been charged with murder. He is 29-year-old George Fernandez. A second shooting, believed to be connected to a carjacking, was then reported around 2 a.m. Friday. Officers found a man and woman shot in the 2300 block of Ginger Lane at the Meadowbrook apartment complex . The man, 23-year-old Joshua Duckworth, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Her name has not been released. Officers say the couple was visiting people who lived at the complex. Candle causes fire at Shelby Township apartment building

SHELBY TOWNSHIP , Mich. - A man left a candle burning when he fell asleep causing a fire Monday morning at the Pebble Creek Apartments in Shelby Township , the fire chief said.  About 12 units were impacted by the fire at the building on Pebble Creek near West Utica and Ryan roads.  "When we got here it was basically a wall of fire," said Shelby Township Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski . "There was a gentleman who had a candle burning, the candle fell of the table and started the blanket and a portion of the couch. He woke up to the smoke detector. And with smoke in there he got his son up. His son tried to drag the couch out of the apartment but was overcome. Once he opened the door wall and put all the fresh oxygen in there the fire really started going." Swinkowski said the man pulled his son out of the building and called 911. Teen suspect sought in killing at Little Rock apartment complex

Authorities are asking for the public's help in locating a 19-year-old Little Rock man in connection with a fatal shooting at a Little Rock apartment complex last month. The Little Rock Police Department on Wednesday said it is still looking for Jasper "Fugi" Singleton, a suspect in the July 27 killing of Steven McPherson, 43, at Big Country Chateau Apartments , 6200 Colonel Glenn Road . The agency said Singleton is wanted on a murder warrant. He was identified as a suspect Aug. 2. On the night of the killing, officers in the area heard gunfire and rushed to the complex, which sits at the northwest corner of the intersection of University Avenue and Colonel Glenn Road . Two Former UConn Students Face Jail For Setting Fire To Cars At Carriage House Apartments

Two former UConn students who faced arson charges for setting a fire at the off- campus Carriage House apartments pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless burning Friday in Superior Court in Rockville. Logan Rama, 20, of New Milford, and David Kuhn, 20, of Sherman, faced a variety of charges related to setting the fire in October 2015. The pair, who were roommates at UConn until they left the university during the fall semester of 2015, were initially charged with first-degree arson, first- degree criminal mischief , tampering with a motor vehicle, first- degree reckless endangerment and conspiracy to commit first-degree arson. According to arrest warrants for the pair, firefighters and state police responded to a car fire at 5 Carriage House Road about 5:20 a.m. Oct. 11, 2015. Three vehicles and part of the front door to an apartment were burning. No injuries were reported, but the fires caused about $34,000 worth of damage, according to the warrant. (Photo: MattGush, Getty Images/iStockphoto) An afternoon fire in an East Naples apartment resulted in at least one person being treated for smoke inhalation and a family being displaced, according to the Greater Naples Fire Rescue District . The fire happened about noon in the 3400 block of Winifred Row Lane at Berkshire Reserve near Golden Gate, fire officials said. The fire started in the kitchen and caused substantial damage . No other injuries were reported. Kimbro, who authorities believe raped and murdered 22-year-old Molly Matheson near the Texas Christian University campus , is also charged with killing Megan Getrum of Plano. According to the indictment, Kimbro killed Getrum by "strangling, drowning and inflicting blunt force injuries " on her before dumping her body in Dallas' Lake Ray Hubbard on April 14 or 15. Plano police also believe Kimbro sexually assaulted Getrum . Divers recovered Getrum 's body April 15, but she was not identified until her family reported her missing several days later. 2-year-old injured in two-story fall from window in Portland apartment

PORTLAND (AP) — Police in the Maine city of Portland say a 2-year-old child was injured after falling from a second-story window. The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/2g0ZF1W ) a 2-year-old fell two stories out of an apartment window Monday . According to Portland Police Department spokesman Lt . Robert Martin, the child suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The child was taken to Maine Medical Center . In an email, Lt. Martin wrote it appeared the window screen gave way when the child pressed against it. Portland police are investigating the incident as an accident.

Hostage situation ends in Charleston after gunman shot

(AP) - A fired dishwasher shot and killed a chef and held a "small number" of people hostage for about three hours before he was shot by police at a crowded restaurant in a tourist-heavy area of downtown Charleston , South Carolina, on Thursday, authorities and one of the restaurant's owners said. The hostages were freed with no injuries, Mayor John Tecklenburg said. The shooting took place at Virginia's restaurant on the usually crowded King Street , a line of shops and nice dining that caters to both tourists and residents in South Carolina's largest and most historic city. Tecklenburg quickly said the shooting was "the act of a disgruntled employee" and not a terrorist attack or a hate crime in a city where nine black church members were killed by a white man two years ago. Amherst police investigating reports of shots fired near Townehouse Apartments

AMHERST -- Over a half dozen town police officers responded to the Townehouse apartments early Sunday morning for reports of a fight and gunshots. Officers from the UMass Police Department were also called in to help with the incident. A caller from the nearby Brandywine apartments reported what he thought were gunshots. According to  police records , officers closed off a crime scene and searched the area. They also brought in K-9 Marvin to search for evidence.  There were no injuries or arrests but police are continuing to investigate.   No further details were available.

The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 5:15 a.m. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked people to pray for a young Australian boy who is missing after a vehicle attack on a popular Barcelona promenade that killed 13 people. Turnbull said Saturday that the boy's mother was badly injured and is in a hospital following Friday's attack at the Las Ramblas promenade . Turnbull says the boy's family is searching for him. He did not release the boy's name. Turnbull says: "All of us as parents know the anguish his father is going through, and his whole family is going through, as they rush to seek to find him in Barcelona."
