Soaring housing prices a growing concern

The Bay State’s booming economy is bringing with it a downside for those looking to rent an apartment or buy a home in the state: soaring housing costs , particularly in Greater Boston. The problem isn’t new, but it’s more acute in places where the economy has taken off, spurred by a surge in the life sciences sector and the arrival of top companies like General Electric. That upward pressure is one reason why Beacon Hill leaders are continuing to look for ways to create new affordable housing units while preserving existing units . Gov. Charlie Baker this week announced $72 million in housing subsidy funds and additional state and federal tax credits to 25 projects across the state. The goal is to help create, refurbish and preserve 1, 970 housing units , including units reserved for low- income families and families making their way out of homelessness. “Safe and affordable housing is a cornerstone to the success of our commonwealth’s families, including access to job opportu

Massive apartment project to change face of downtown Boca

Mizner 200 will be one of the largest construction projects in Boca Raton's downtown, offering three nine- story apartment buildings across 9 acres. There will be 384 new apartments and garages with 672 parking spaces. You’ll also see an overhauled stretch of Southeast Mizner Boulevard — inundated with new canopy trees, park space and benches along an 8-foot-wide, paver-laden sidewalk. It’s too early to say when construction will begin. But Mizner 200, at 200 SE Mizner Blvd ., will give the area a much-needed face-lift, some residents say. It’s the latest high- rise project coming to downtown Boca, among the fastest rising in Palm Beach County . “It’s an amazing project and one that I think Boca can stand behind in a very proud fashion,” said Marisela Catilla, a resident of Royal Palm Place just across the street. The city, which this week approved the project, said it’s a product of cooperation between Mizner 200’s developer, Coral Springs-based El- ad National Properties , a

But recently their creative energies have gone in another direction: Refurbishing an old church in Los Angeles' Highland Park. The Ruby Street is now booked with weddings almost every weekend of the year. The couple live in a home they've created in the basement and it's the perfect collaboration of their tastes and styles. When they bought the place, the basement was dark with boarded up windows. They were more than surprised when they started stripping away siding to find gorgeous old windows. Kelci Holman and Nicholas Beardsley

Kelci Holman and Nicholas Beardsley July 29, 2017, in Philadelphia Hello there Every day after work at the Fox Chase Cancer Center lab , Kelci took the train to see Nic, the guy she had met as they both learned how to mentor incoming freshman honors students two weeks before. Between Fox Chase and University City, the Roslyn native came up with what she hoped were reasonable excuses for her to be on campus, because Nic was interesting, and cute, and so funny. “She’d say something like, ‘Oh, I’m in town to do something with a friend, but if you’re going to be around later, we could hang out,’ ” Nic, who was then a rising sophomore architecture major , remembered. There were group outings, such as seeing Batman in IMAX. But sometimes, it was just the two of them. “We both love watching the Olympics, and so I’d be like, ‘Oh! Let’s go watch swimming!’ or something,” said Kelci, who was in the same year at Drexel University, studying biological sci

Brooklyn apartment hallway turned to Nancy Kerrigan museum

Image
Two roommates who turned their 25- foot Brooklyn apartment hallways into a museum dedicated to the infamous rivalry between figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan have now turned their unique idea into a full-time career, launching a museum space dedicated to iconic moments in pop culture. Viviana Olen, 30, and Matt Harkins, 29, launched the  Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan (THNK) 1994 Museum in 2015 using money raised via Kickstarter, after coming up with the unique idea to fill an otherwise-useless space in their home.  What began as a fun-filled hobby however has now become a successful business, with the overwhelming success of their hallway museum leading them to open a full-time 'celebration of fandom', showcasing art, installations, and even clippings from tabloids focusing on popular celebrity icons from the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Brooklyn apartment into The Tonya Harding Nancy Kerrigan 1994 Museum in 2015, where it remained for two years&qu
