ALLENTOWN — Talen Energy will vacate The Plaza at PPL Center in downtown Allentown early next year and move its employees into cheaper office space just blocks away on Hamilton Street, saving the company millions but leaving its landmark headquarters building mired in foreclosure and facing an uncertain future. Talen spokesman Todd Martin , responding to a request by The Morning Call, said Tuesday that the energy company has made a “five-year commitment” to rent two floors of the soon-to-be-opened Tower 6 at Sixth and Hamilton streets. The move will take effect in the second quarter of 2018, coinciding with the end of Talen’s lease at PPL Plaza at 835 W. Following violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, white nationalist Richard Spencer tried to hold a private press conference in Washington, DC, on Monday. But two different hotels in DC canceled on him before the events were scheduled to start. In the end, Spencer, a leader of the alt-right movement, had to hold the press conference in an apartment he calls an office and part-time residence across the river in Alexandria, Virginia. Spencer, who was in Charlottesville and participated in the rally, has denied that he was one of the organizers of the events there this weekend. He was, however, prominently displayed on flyers advertising the rally. (AP) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law an updated veterans' education bill that marks the largest expansion of college assistance for military veterans in a decade. The Forever GI Act immediately removed a 15- year time limit on the use of GI benefits. The measure also increases financial assistance for thousands serving in the National Guard and Reserve, building on a 2008 law that guaranteed veterans a full-ride scholarship to any in- state public university , or a similar cash amount to attend private colleges . Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin , who joined Trump for the signing, said the new law also provides benefits to Purple Heart recipients whose injuries forced them to leave the service. Benefits can also now be transferred to the eligible dependent of service members who are killed in the line of duty. MINNETONKA, MINN. — A joint venture between LeCesse Development Corp ., Morgan Management and UC Funds has broken ground on RiZE at Opus Park, a 322- unit apartment community in Minnetonka, a western suburb of Minneapolis. The $73 million project is a redevelopment of the Opus Business Park . The property will feature studio, one- and two-bedroom units. OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG-WECP) - A Crestview man who was shot twice after allegedly forcing his way into an Okaloosa Island apartment in July has been charged with burglary and battery by the Okaloosa County Sheriff ’s Office. Sheriff's Office officials say 27-year-old Eddie Ray Moore was taken into custody on August 23. According to investigators, Moore knocked on Jonathan Kirby’s door around 7 a.m. July 1st and then pushed his way into the apartment. Kirby says Moore hit him and the pair began struggling . From there, investigators say Kirby got his .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun from the kitchen. He told Investigators when Moore pulled out his own firearm, he fired at him multiple times, hitting Moore in the right hip and leg. A new food pantry has opened in Davenport, and it represents nearly the 200th for those who partner with  River Bend Foodbank . This pantry will be open twice each month and is intended for tenants of Vera French Housing , Davenport. It is located in an apartment complex at 215 E. 37th St. Stacy Kiser-Willey, executive director of Vera French Housing , got the idea for the food pantry after hearing a talk by Mike Miller, River Bend's executive director. The Vera French apartments have about 137 residents and families. Many are on limited incomes, with money becoming short by the end of each month, Kiser-Willey said. Before the pantry opened on Wednesday, the tenants were directed to another pantry location or helped out to an extent from the apartment complex office . By Daniel Barnett OVERLAND PARK, KS — Authorities are searching for what caused a fire at an apartment complex that took the life of two young children early Tuesday morning . Fire crews were called at about 2:30 a.m. to the Colonial Gardens Apartments , located in the 8800 block of Broadmoor Court. While on the way to the scene, units received reports of victims trapped in the complex and immediately called for a second alarm. Firefighters say a family was on the bottom floor of the apartment complex when the fire started. They say an infant and a seven-year-old were able to make it out but a three-year-old and a five-year-old were killed in the flames. The mother of the children was taken to an area hospital with minor burns. The children's father was seen walking around the area, distraught over the loss of his children.
