"There's very strong resistance to it," Mitch Newman, one of the organizers of Old Town Neighbor's Vote, said Tuesday. "Probably, of the people we talked to, 9-to-1 against it." Newman said residents were blindsided by a community meeting earlier this month that was promoted as being about a "transit-oriented development" without mentioning the purpose of the proposal. Driving through California and Nevada we experienced another culture shock. America is filled with colors everywhere. Los Angeles has the famous Paul Smith ’s pink wall. San Francisco has the beautiful red Golden Gate Bridge and Las Vegas is almost an explosion of colors. In Aarhus, where I live, almost all the houses, buildings, shops and stores are built with red or grey bricks and all the buildings in a special area have the same color. It is like the different areas have a special house dress code . They have the same shape, the same color and the same look. When you are walking down Mission Beach Boulevard all the houses have different colors and different shapes and none of them look alike. You see beautiful murals everywhere and it makes the city look fun and happy. All new

Neighbors arrested in case of missing pregnant woman after newborn found

The neighbors of a missing pregnant woman from North Dakota have been charged in connection to her disappearance. William Henry Hoehn , 32, and Brooke Lynn Crews , 38, were arrested Thursday after police searched and found a newborn in the pair’s North Fargo apartment where 22-year-old Savanna Greywind was last spotted. Greywind, who is eight months pregnant, was reported missing Saturday after she visited their apartment for a dress fitting and never returned home. Fargo police said they previously searched the apartment three times with consent from the tenants but nothing unusual was found. “In the initial missing person ’s investigation, interviews were conducted with Crews and Hoehn and no leads were developed,” police said in a statement. “Crews indicated that Savanna had left the apartment after helping her with the sewing project.” Authorities then executed a search warrant Thursday and discovered Crews home with a newborn girl. The baby is healthy and was taken to a hospi

Fairfield Co loses jobs, a dream of changing its fortunes | News

JENKINSVILLE (AP) — For the better part of a decade, thousands of people showed up in this town on the shores of Lake Monticello and got to work on a project that was sure to change its fortunes. As a pair of nuclear reactors rose behind the gates of the V.C. Summer power plant , a town of fewer than 100 residents suddenly had a few thousand. Campsites and restaurants sprang up before long to meet the new need, banking on a few more years of construction work and decades of maintenance to come. The boom in this rural corner of Fairfield County coincided with rising hopes in Winnsboro, the county seat, which is 25 minutes east on winding backroads. South Carolina Electric & Gas was spending billions of dollars to build two of America's first new nuclear reactors since the 1980s, and county officials expected a property tax windfall — tens of millions of dollars every year for decades. They imagined new fortunes for one of the state's smallest counties, a place with a sh

Knocks on Doors, Screams Alert Residents to Northeast Philadelphia Apartment Fire

Residents ran down the hallway knocking on doors and yelling to help neighbors get out as a blaze burned at a Northeast Philadelphia apartment building overnight . Three people, including a firefighter, suffered injuries in the fire that broke out shortly after midnight Tuesday on the second floor of the G Building at the Canterbury Court Apartments at Academy Road and Morrell Avenue. Firefighters rescued one person and another person was taken to the hospital for evaluation while a firefighter suffered minor injuries that required treatment,  Fire Deputy Chief Gary Loesch said. But, it could have been worse if not for quick-moving firefighters and neighbors helping each other. “They started knocking on the doors and saying the building was on fire,” resident Troy Weaks said. Weaks left his building to see another building, which houses about 10 units, engulfed in flames. “(Residents) just start running through the building and start trying to get everybody out,” Weaks said. “They

Engineer Inspects Hunters Ridge Apartment Complex

An engineer was at the Hunters Ridge Apartments Monday afternoon , surveying the damage after a third- floor apartment collapsed during a party Friday night . . Joel Gillespie, who lives in the Hunters Ridge Apartment complex , was home Friday night when the apartment across the street collapsed. "It was just chaos everywhere. People were coming out, a few on stretchers, just people limping across the parking lot and it was just speechless, you don't know what to say about it," says Gillespie. He says it didn't seem real. "The debris inside the apartment was so thick that the firefighters, when they walked in the door, they had to step up on it because it was waist high, and then they had to duck to get under the doorway," says Gillespie. Mark Byerly is the consulting engineer called to the apartments Monday . He says overloading still seems to be the obvious cause, and the fact that those at the party were jumping to music only made it worse.

Can't afford a house in Rochester, even on a good salary? | Local News

Heather Smith says affordable housing isn 't always affordable. The single mother of two said when her $880-per-month rent in southeast Rochester jumped by $85 in the second year, it left her struggling to pay for rent and food, even though she has good job at Zumbro Valley Health Center . "Why am I not able to afford the basics I need to live?" she asked during Tuesday's community meeting held by CURE — Communities United for Rochester's Empowerment — a social action group affiliated with SEIU Healthcare. She said the unexpected increase on an already tight budget could have been unbearable without outside family support. "I got a 46-cent raise at work," she said, noting it didn't cover the rent increase, or her rising food costs . "How am I supposed to save for a house?" she said. Homeownership, said Zach Winter, doesn't necessarily solve the problem of a tight budget. He said he bought a house near Silver Lake, which

Follow KDKA-TV : Facebook | Twitter RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The woman killed when a car plowed into a crowd of people protesting a white nationalist rally in Virginia was described as a “ true American hero ” who died doing what she loved — standing up for people. Two state troopers also died when their helicopter crashed in a wooded area while deployed as part of a large- scale police effort to contain Saturday’s violence. They were remembered for their commitment and love of their jobs. Heather Heyer, 32, was among the hundreds of protesters who had gathered in Charlottesville to decry what was believed to be the largest gathering of white supremacists in a decade — including neo-Nazis, skinheads and Ku Klux Klan members — who descended on the city to rally against plans to remove a Confederate statue. Felicia Correa, a longtime friend of Heyer, said the slain woman died standing up for people of color and called her a “ true American hero .” She said she spoke with Heyer’s mother,
