The Home Front: In Colorado, ‘fed up’ towns take on the oil-and-gas industry

Image
“Colorado residents fed up with what they see as the state’s failure to protect people and the environment are fighting fossil- fuel development inside their towns by making new rules requiring odor control , bigger setbacks and company disclosure of underground oil and gas flowlines,” reports The Denver Post . “But the industry and state government are ready to fight back. An odor- control measure in Erie, letting police hit companies with tickets for foul fumes, takes effect next week. Erie, Broomfield, Thornton and Lafayette are each developing map submission rules , with leaders saying the fatal April 17 house explosion in Firestone makes this a no-brainer. Broomfield residents also will vote on whether to change their charter to require protection of health, safety and the environment as preconditions before drilling inside city limits can be done.” “At the urging of Councilwoman Polly Christensen , Longmont has posted a link on its city government home page to the City Co

A Boston Apartment Steeped in Art and Family History

Name: Eva, Jack, their 3 year old Eleanor and Robin Williamson the cat Location: Dorchester — Boston, Massachusetts The basics: Four years, owned 1,100 square feet Eva and Jack's space is like a cozy and welcoming art gallery . After bouncing back from a fire that destroyed most of their belongings, they've created a home that feels stylish and exceedingly personal. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live in our 1904 first floor condo with my husband, artist Jack Thrombly , and our nearly-three-year-old, Eleanor. I should note that we have an agoraphobic cat named Robin Williamson , though she most frequently enjoys the space underneath the furniture, and rather less of the limelight. We live on the first floor of a tripple-decker in the Pope's Hill region of Dorchester in Boston. Jack and I have always been treasure hunters in thrift and bookstores (and the odd side-of-the-road find), and have filled our home with beautiful f

Investors Keenly Interested in Colorado Springs Apartments

Colorado Springs , Colo.—Denver’s one of the more robust apartment markets in the nation, but a new report by Colorado Springs - based apartment specialist Commonwealth reported that investor interest in secondary- market Colorado apartment properties (such as Colorado Springs ) is quite strong as well. Altogether, investment sales of apartments in Colorado Springs in 2014 totaled just over $475 million—a record. The 2014 total compares with $166.6 million in 2013, $177.8 million in 2012, and $125.5 million in 2011. Sales in the first quarter of 2015—the total of two transactions—was $60.9 million, which is about the same as it was in Q1 2014. Commonwealth pointed out that customarily first quarter sales are the slowest of the year, so it’s likely that sales will be strong again for the rest of this year, if not record-breaking again. Why the increase in demand for Colorado Springs properties ? The report posited a number of reasons. One is that the city is growing at a considerab

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – We now know someone was cooking urine at the Brandywine Apartments in Amherst, Wednesday night, prompting a temporary evacuation.
